El 77.4% de la PEA [Población Económicamente Activa] nicaragüense se encuentra trabajando en pequeños negocios abiertos por su propia cuenta en el sector informal, la mayoría de ellos necesitan mano de obra familiar no remunerada para poder funcionar. De ahí, la necesidad de los hogares de echar mano de la fuerza de trabajo familiar que tiene disponible y que aún no tiene la edad para buscar un trabajo asalariado, tan necesario para complementar los ingresos del hogar. Es aquí donde surge el trabajo infantil que apoya los negocios de la familia, insertándose en actividades que contribuyen a que los negocios funcionen y generen ingresos.
