Thus the concept of acts of a mere sufferance contains elements over and above that of knowledge. Its real basis seems to lie :(a) in an obligingness on the part of the owner, who is acting as a good neighbour(used in a broad sense) and tacitly permits acts to be carried out on his property which are advantageous to the author of the acts without causing appreciable damage to the property and without the owner in any way abandoning his claim to ownership, such permission being revocable at any time;(b) in the absence of any intention on the part of the author of the acts to make the property his own; and(c) in the fact that the acts themselves will not be sufficient to constitute a possession. 3, record 4, English, - act%20of%20sufferance

The lack of clear reasons for the decision has other potential ramifications. For example, it calls into question the continued existence of the so-called rolled-up charge. The necessity for this type of charge arises in cases where there is some evidence on multiple defences, typically self-defence, provocation, and intoxication. Although the evidence may not be sufficient for any of the particular defences to succeed, the evidence of all the relevant circumstances could cumulatively impact upon the accused's state of mind so as to raise a reasonable doubt about his or her actual intent. 1, record 22, English, - rolled%2Dup%20charge

Biometric algorithms are automated methods that enable a biometric system to recognize an individual by his or her anatomical/behavioral traits. They consist of a sequence of automated operations performed by the system to verify or identify its ownership. These operations include quality assessment, enhancement, feature extraction, classification/indexing, matching and fusion, as well as compression algorithms, often used to reduce storage space and bandwidth. 3, record 26, English, - biometric%20algorithm

Air-displacement plethysmography is a densitometry technique used to determine body composition with air displacement(instead of water displacement, as used with hydrostatic weighing) to determine body volume. The equipment consists of a closed airtight chamber... The volume of air in the chamber when the chamber is empty is known. When a person enters the airtight chamber, he displaces his own volume in air. The volume of air remaining in the chamber is determined(with a correction for thoracic air volume). The person's body volume is the difference between the volume of air in the empty chamber minus the volume of air in the chamber when the person is in the chamber. 5, record 66, English, - air%2Ddisplacement%20plethysmography

HGN [horizontal gaze nystagmus] is an involuntary jerking of the eye that occurs naturally as the eyes gaze to the side. HGN is exacerbated by certain classes of drugs. During the HGN test, the eyes of an individual are observed as the individual follows a slowly moving object, such as a pen, horizontally with his or her eyes as it is moved from side to side. The officer separately observes the left and right eye for three signs : lack of smooth pursuit(present, absent) ;distinct nystagmus at maximum deviation(present, absent) ;and nystagmus onset before 45°(present, absent). 3, record 68, English, - horizontal%20gaze%20nystagmus%20test

There was cogent, if not overwhelming, evidence that Paolo was a battered child and that Marco was his abuser. On the evidence, the jury could find that the physical abuse escalated during Paolo's life and continued until very shortly before Paolo's death. There was evidence that Paolo's death was not the result of any disease process, natural causes(e. g. For example, to the extent that society fails to recognize the power differential between two gay men in a battering relationship, it may not be able to conceptualize a killing by the battered man of his abuser as self-defense. The requirement of equal force is especially harmful to a battered man, who is likely to be perceived as more equal in strength to his male abuser than would a battered woman. The use of deadly force by him will appear irrational or vengeful if the power imbalance is ignored. 2, record 76, English, - battered%20man

During the voir dire, Dr. Marshall discussed delayed disclosure of child sexual abuse, based on his knowledge of the scientific literature in the area. He testified that there are many factors which can affect the timing of a complaint, including the relationship between the child and the abuser and the nature of the abuse. Some factors might discourage children from reporting abuse, such as embarrassment; fear of getting themselves or others into trouble; bribery or threats by the perpetrator; fear of being punished or sent away; disruption of the family; or fear that they would not be believed. Young children might also not fully comprehend what happened or not see anything wrong with the abuse. 3, record 78, English, - child%20sexual%20abuse

Underwater weighing, or hydrostatic weighing, is an assessment of body composition based on the determination of body density of densitometry. To determine the density of the body, the athlete is first weighed on land and is then submerged in a tank of water to determine his or her underwater weight... The basic premise of this technique is that fat-free mass sinks and fat floats; therefore, the more the body weighs in the water, the less fat within the body. 3, record 89, English, - hydrostatic%20weighing

St. Patrick's Day is observed each year on March 17. St. Patrick's Day is not an official national holiday in Canada. It is, however, a provincial holiday in Newfoundland. St. Patrick's Day invokes the spirit of St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland who is credited with bringing Christianity to the island. Observed as a religious occasion in Ireland, in Canada, it is often marked with festive parades and the wearing of green. It is believed that Patrick was born in Kilpatrick Scotland. When Patrick was in his early teens, he was captured during a raid and taken to Ireland as a slave. There he learned to tend and herd sheep. At this time, Druids and pagans occupied Ireland. Patrick learned the practices and language of his captors. Because of the hardships he faced, Patrick turned to God. When Patrick was twenty, God came to him in a dream and advised him to go to the coast. Patrick escaped and sailers took him back to Britain where he was reunited with his parents. But Ireland beckoned to the young man through is dreams, so Patrick entered the priesthood, was ordained as a bishop and returned to the Emerald Isle in March 433. He traveled across the country converting the people to Christianity. 1, record 91, English, - St%2E%20Patrick%26rsquo%3Bs%20Day
