Ferguson, the younger son of Dr. James Ferguson during the late 19th century (from temporary deposit form). ... This enclosed wagon was used by Mr. John D. Ferguson ca. 1890-1910 to sell Stroud’s Tea, Spices, Cordials and his father’s (Dr. James Ferguson) patent medicines from Thurso and Buckingham to L’Orignal and Hawkesbury. During the winter, the wheels were removed and sleigh runners installed.

The wagon... was nicely painted in bright red and it had his name and calling done in gold,... on the sides. In the summer it was on wheels(similar to buckboard wheels) but in the winter there was a set of double truck runners(like those on a bobsled) onto which the body was moved for winter travel.

The old Custom House(now part of Pointe-à-Callière, the Montréal Museum of Archaeology and History) was built in 1836, to keep pace with the expanding Port. Goods could pass through customs here in Montréal rather than having to stop off in Québec City. This was the first building designed in Montréal by John Ostell, an architect from Britain who would go on to put his name to at least 25 major buildings in the city, including the Old Courthouse.

St. Stephen's Day in Hungary is observed on August 20, the day on which the allegedly sacred relics of Stephen I of Hungary were transferred to the city of Buda. This day is the ultimate public holiday in Hungary. Stephen I, or "Stephanus" as he was named in Latin by Pope Sylvester II, was originally a pagan chieftain's son answering to the name "Vajk". He gouged out the eyes and poured boiling lead into the ears of his arch rival(Vasoly) and was awarded a crown by the pope for forcing catholicism onto the Hungarian people. The converted king was canonized by Pope Gregory VII in AD 1083 and has since been referred to as St Stephen of Hungary. Under communism St. Stephen's Day was referred to by the Hungarians as "The celebration of the new bread-the end of the harvest".

The Riddler, real name Edward Nigma is a DC Comics supervillain, an enemy of Batman. Created by Bill Finger and Dick Sprang, he first appeared in Detective Comics No. 140(1948). Known for his green, question mark-covered costume(either as a skintight catsuit or a business suit and bowler hat), The Riddler is obsessed with riddles, puzzles, and word games. He delights in planning crimes and forewarning police and Batman of his capers by sending them often complex riddles. Many adaptations of the Batman mythos have given The Riddler the real name Edward Nigma(or Nygma) or E. Nigma. Occasionally his full name has been given as Edward E. Nigma. Some have depicted this as a false name and his real name as Edward Nashton. In the French and Quebecois translations of various Batman titles, his nom de plume has been translated to Le Sphinx, as in the riddle-posing monster of Greek mythology that Oedipus confronted. In Italy he's called Enigmista, the literal translation of "riddler". In Mexico and Latin America, The Riddler is known as El Acertijo, which literally means "The Riddle". In Brazil, the character is named Charada, which also means "Riddle".

The knee-bolter was a steel topped table on a track, with a wide slot in the front to admit the knee-bolter saw. The top of the table was level with the deck so the operator stood in a hole... The saw was vertical and was sixty inches in diameter, ran at 600 RPM and had sixty large, mean-looking, inserted teeth. The table had an arm that stuck out to fit between the operator's legs, hence the name "knee bolter. "The operator would wrestle the block onto the table, and, with his legs, push table and block into the saw, rotating the block so as to peel off the bark. If there was a large knot in the block, he would saw directly through it, so the knot would be the part of the block that would necessarily be wasted in the final cutting of the shingles.

A diffuse white ring surrounding the shadow cast by an observer’s head upon dew-covered ground when the solar elevation is low and the distance from observer to shadow is large.

It is most apparent when the sun is low in the sky and when the surface is dew-covered. The explanation of the heiligenschein varies depending upon whether it is seen over a dry or a dew-covered surface. When an observer’s shadow is cast on a dry, irregular surface (such as gravel or vegetation), each irregularity near the antisolar point covers its own shadow. In other directions, the average brightness results from a mixture of sunlit and shaded surfaces. The lower the sun in the sky, the longer the shadows and so the greater the contrast with the brighter region near the antisolar point.

OBS

The heiligenschein is occasionally called Cellini's halo, after Benvenuto Cellini who described its behavior in his memoirs of 1562. He even pointed out that it appears to the greatest advantage when the grass is moist with dew, but felt its appearance bespoke the wondrous ways of Gods providence toward me. Shades of this interpretation are also found in the name heiligenschein : It is German for the light of the holy one.

This was the name, in English practice, of a writ of execution first given by the statute of Westm. 2(13 Edw. I, c. 18) either upon a judgment for a debt or damages or upon the forfeiture of a recognizance taken in the king's court. It was so called because it was in the choice or election of the plaintiff whether he would sue out this writ or a fi. fa. By it the defendant's goods and chattels were appraised and all of them(except oxen and beasts of the plow) were delivered to the plaintiff, at such reasonable appraisement and price, in part satisfaction of his debt.
