DEF

[Instruction using] programs that understand the student’s internal cognitive structures; are able to analyse a student’s answer to a question and determine which parts of the question confuse the student. They then use that information to provide very specific instruction. A system of this type would be a substitute for a very competent and experienced teacher.

CONT

Intelligent Computer-Assisted Instruction (ICAI) ... encompasses two primary areas. One is instructional programs that model the learner ... These programs collect detailed data about the student’s work and formulate a hypothesis about what the student knows and is thinking. ... The other area is the use of expert systems ... that contain all known information on a particular topic, a set of logic that ties all this information together ..., and in some cases a program that allows a person to converse easily and in natural language with the computer.

CONT

The components of an ICAI program are problem-solving expertise, student model, and tutoring module.

OBS

For historical reasons, much of the research in the field of educational software involving artificial intelligence has been conducted under the name of "ICAI. "This acronym stands for "Intelligent Computer-Aided Instruction, "a phrase that evolved out of the name "Computer-Aided Instruction"(CAI)... Most recently, "ICAI" has often been replaced by the acronym "ITS, "for "Intelligent Tutoring Systems"....

CONT

DEF

... a measure of the tendency of water to move from high free energy to lower free energy.

CONT

Water potential is the sum of osmotic potential, pressure potential, [gravitational potential,] and matric potential.

CONT

For historical and practical reasons, however, plant physiologists have developed another parameter called the water potential(psiw). Water potential is expressed in pressure units such as megapascals(MPa).... Like chemical potential, water potential is a relative quantity, and is always determined as a difference between the sample in question and a standard reference. For plant physiologists, the standard reference for water potential measurements is the water potential of pure water at one atmosphere of pressure. This reference value is defined as 0 MegaPascals.

OBS

[Water potential] is replacing the concept of osmotic pressure and differs from osmotic pressure in taking capillary and imbibitional forces into account.

OBS

The symbol for water potential is the Greek letter Psi. ... Water potential is measured in units of atmospheric pressure; bars or dynes per square centimeter. (1 bar = 106 dynes/cm²).

OBS

The symbol used is the Greek letter psiw.

CONT

Canadians have worked in very diverse work-spaces throughout the 20th century. This photographic exhibition gives the viewer a closer look at these spaces and, more importantly, offers a perspective on the ordinary people who work within them. These people were not selected because of their fame or name, but for the ways in which they are representative of Canada and its economy, whether they are at work outdoors, underground, in a factory or in the home. These photographs were produced for many reasons : as a tool of communication; as a means for the government to promote and administer its programs; as a way for industry to advertise its achievements and thereby demonstrate corporate pride; to enable ordinary citizens to produce an historical and cultural record of a subject of personal importance to them.

OBS
