Subject field(s)
  • Racquet Sports
DEF

A soft shot hit off a ball on the fly. Such a shot barely drops over the net. It is used when the opponent is entrenched in the backcourt.

CONT

The standard sliced backhand return played too high will invite the volley from the server following in; the better, lower return, to the server’s feet may induce a drop volley.

PHR

Delicate, solid, touch drop volley.

Key term(s)
  • drop-volley

DEF

Amortie effectuée en position de volée.

CONT

Thimble Removal Press.-ALTECH Thimble Removal Press is a proven technology for the automation of the task of stripping cast iron thimbles from the stubs on anode rods. The rods are transferred on a P&F overhead conveyor system in the Anode Service Plant to the Thimble Stripping Press. The thimbles will be stripped from the stubs one-by-one for avoiding unnecessary stresses on the yoke arms. It has been investigated to strip off simultaneously the thimbles from all the stubs, but due to the fact that the stubs have different lengths the thimble stripping cylinders from below will hit the stubs at different time and bend the yoke arm upwards.

CONT

Thimble Stripping Presses. Our Thimble Presses are designed to remove the Cast Iron Thimble from the Steel Stubs. Units are available from 50 to 400 tons capacity to remove any shape of thimble.Thimble Presses are designed to accommodate all rod styles from single pin to six pin. High productivity to suit operating requirements, with cycle times as low as 15 seconds.

CONT

Butt Removal and Thimble Stripping presses with capacities up to 300 tonnes for aluminium smelters.

DEF

For a delivered rock, to miss its mark and unintentionally touch another rock in front of the house.

OBS

The rock sometimes caroms off the hit rock and starts gliding in another direction. Distinguish from "to chip" or "rub, "the action of a delivered rock that grazes on another as it passes by.

OBS

Most sources consider "chip," "rub" and "wick" as synonyms, using one or the other in expressions of which these terms are elements.

DEF

CONT

It is interesting to hear the answers people give to the question, "How do you make your horse strike off into Canter or Lope?" The answers range from :hit your horse with the whip by the flanks or kick the ribs of the horse as hard as you can with your heels or spurs or trot faster and faster until the horse by itself strikes off into canter.

CONT

An equine training example of this could be if the rider clicks his tongue just as he feels a young horse about to strike off in canter, and repeats this every time the horse goes into canter, the horse will soon begin to associate the click with the canter transition and produce the canter transition on the click signal.

CONT

The horse should strike off into the canter, on the lead you have indicated.

CONT

Get a nice trot going and strike off at the canter on the leg next to the fence.

OBS

Although a canter and a gallop are the same gait, the canter tends to be the gentler of the two.

CONT

MILES is a system the Army uses for wargames. You mount a small box, the transmitter, on the end of the barrel of your weapon, and wear a harness that has several straps on the front and back with infrared receptors on them. You also have a key that is normally in the transmitter to enable it. The transmitter has a microphone in it, and whenever a shot is fired, the sound causes it to fire a coded IR laser beam. The sensors on the harness are wired to a box on the back which detects when you have been hit. If you are, a beeper starts sounding loudly. To turn it off you have to take the key out of the transmitter, thus disabling it, and put it in a switch in the harness. Then you are "dead", and have to wait for an observer to come around with a special key that can reset the harness. They can also use the God gun, which is so called because it can fire pulses that will "kill" you like the other transmitters, but it can also fire pulses that reset your harness(bring you back to life...)

DEF

The nuclear process that powers the sun. It involves the fusion of nuclei in 3 kinds of collisions. The cycle starts for any one proton when it collides with another. This collision produces a deuterium nucleus, a neutrino that shoots off into space and a position that eventually annihilates a stray electron. Next, the deuterium nucleus is hit by another proton, producing a nucleus of helium-3 and a burst of gamma rays. The helium-3 hits another helium-3, producing a nucleus of inert helium and two protons. These 2 protons now start the proton-proton cycle over again.

CONT

Deep within the sun a series of nuclear reactions called the proton-proton chain converts hydrogen (protons) into helium by merging sets of 4 hydrogen nuclei into one helium nucleus (alpha particle).

Domaine(s)
  • Astrochimie et cosmochimie
  • Astronomie

CONT
