A stroke made by hitting down on the ball with a slicing motion. Such an action imparts both backspin and side-spin to the ball, forcing it to break to a right-handed player's left side just before he is to hit the ball. 2, record 2, English, - slice
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
The generic term "slice" in English can mean one of 2 things: 1) the actual stroke which causes the ball to turn sideways 2) the type of ball that comes off the strings of someone making such a stroke. Moreover, many purists instructors feel that one should maintain a nuance between a slice, a chip and a chop. Nonetheless, the French equivalent for the English word "slice" ranges from "slice" (anglicisme accepté) to "chop". Note also that the French use the term "slice" to denote a particular type of serve. Compare the term "slice" with "topspin shot", "sidespin". 2, record 2, English, - slice

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 OBS
4, record 2, French, - coup%20coup%C3%A9

In Spanish there are at least 18 possible ways of translating the generic English term "hole". In tennis, only 2 of the terms are used. The term "agujero", used in many subject fields other than in tennis, refers more often than not to a small hole that usually goes right through an object as in the phrase "un agujero en el pantalón". "Hueco", on the other hand, usually alludes to a hole in the shape of a shaft, tunnel or more specifically in tennis, an alley or lane. Moreover phraseological units containing either of the two terms are not interchangeable. Hence the two terms are very close synonyms but not perfect synonyms. See the usage samples below. Note also that in English the term "opening" may also have different meanings: 1) an opportunity to break even or break ahead 2) a spot on the court that is not being covered by one’s opponent. 1, record 13, English, - hole
