Tal y como señala el Diccionario panhsipánico de dudas, el término francés autostop se ha incorporado al español con las formas autostop y autoestop. Ambas resultan igualmente válidas, aunque sea más usual y recomendable la etimológica autostop. No son adecuadas, sin embargo, las adaptaciones auto-stop y auto stop.

Para referirse a la persona que lleva a cabo esta actividad, se emplean por igual las formas autostopista y autoestopista.
