A small percentage of HIV-infected [human immunodeficiency virus-infected] individuals not on ART [antiretroviral treatment] do not develop significant progression of disease. These individuals tend to remain asymptomatic with stable CD4+ T-cell counts and low levels of HIV [human immunodeficiency virus] viremia. Long-term non-progressors are individuals without significant disease progression for many years while maintaining a minimal CD4+ T-cell count of 500 cells/mm3, likely as a result of sustained immune control limiting their HIV viremia to fewer than 10, 000 copies/mL. 4, record 1, English, - long%2Dterm%20non%2Dprogressor

Record number: 2, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The viral load test provides important information that is used in conjunction with the CD4 cell count : to monitor the status of HIV disease, to guide recommendations for therapy, and to predict the future course of HIV.... A viral load test is ordered when a patient is first diagnosed with HIV. The test result functions as a baseline measurement that shows how actively the virus is reproducing and whether treatment is immediately necessary. If and when therapy is started, your doctor should order a viral load test and a CD4 count about two to eight weeks after you start a treatment to evaluate whether therapy is being effective.... If the viral load measurement is high, it indicates that HIV is reproducing and that the disease will likely progress faster than if the viral load is low. 4, record 2, English, - viral%20load%20test

1, record 6, French, - Division%20du%20contr%C3%B4le%20des%20maladies%20transmissibles

The AIDS case definition used for surveillance in the United States was updated by the CDC(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) in 1992.... The new definition added CD4 T-cell counts, a common marker for assessing AIDS-related immune system damage. The formal AIDS diagnosis now includes all HIV-infected adults and adolescents with a CD4 T-cell count below 200 or who have been diagnosed with pulmonary tuberculosis, invasive cervical cancer, recurrent pneumonia, HIV encephalopathy, chronic isosporiasis, disseminated histoplasmosis, wasting syndrome, or other conditions. 1, record 10, English, - CD4%20T%2Dcell%20count

The science of AIDS and its impact on the developing world. In 1995, AIDS research stands at a crossroads. Over the past 10 years, much of the research on AIDS has centred on trying to find a cure or a vaccine, with very limited results. While more has been learnt about AIDS in a short time than about almost any other disease, many of the basic questions about the development of AIDS and the behaviour of HIV, the virus which leads to AIDS, remain unanswered. 1, record 14, English, - science%20of%20aids

Recent media reports have painted a relentlessly gloomy picture of the status of AIDS drug development. Yet much useful information on treatment emerged at the 10th International Conference on AIDS in Yokohama, Japan(August 7-12, 1994). Encouraging treatment developments presented in Yokohama include the following : Recombinant human growth hormone therapy significantly increases weight gain as represented by fat-free lean body mass among people with AIDS-related wasting. AZT treatment dramatically reduces the rate of HIV transmission from mother to infant. Acyclovir co-treatment with anti-HIV therapy significantly increases survival time among people with AIDS. Oral ganciclovir appears to be an effective primary prophylaxis for cytomegalovirus disease. The protease inhibitor drug saquinavir reduces viral load and increases CD4 cell counts significantly more when used in a triple combination with AZT and ddC compared to 2 double combinations(AZT plus ddC or saquinavir plus AZT). Quantitative polymerase chain reaction(PCR) and branched chain DNA(bDNA) testing for measuring HIV load is expected to become a major new tool to help guide individual treatment decisions and to evaluate anti-HIV therapies in clinical studies. 1, record 25, English, - AIDS%20drug

The pathogenesis of AIDS is dependent on the biology of HIV, e. g :"Trojan horse" mechanism-virus escapes recognition by replication inside monocytes, from where it can spread to other tissues and other hosts. Latency-Lentiviruses do not show true latency(unlike Herpes viruses or lambda) but do have the capacity to control the expression of their genome by means of virus-encoded trans-acting regulatory proteins(tat and rev).

... the spoken language of everyday life is learned from infancy - in the home, in the streets and at times even from associates of dubious character. It includes figures of speech, manufactured words, phrases of obscure origin and also vulgarities and obscenities. In the spoken language we find nonsense words, grammatical errors, mispronunciations, and fad words and phrases which have a brief period of popularity and are then discarded ... it includes what in America is considered "colloquial" and "slang", and in France "familier, populaire, langue verte and argot ..." Slang is most closely paralleled in French by the "langue verte", which is defined as "the ensemble of words and figures of speech commonly used in the street, along the boulevards, in shops, clubs, markets and workshops, etc." 3, record 47, English, - street%20language
