Subject field(s)

  • Social Law
CONT

In 2012, the Supreme Court of Canada(SCC) held that the criminal law imposes a duty on a person to disclose HIV positive status before sexual activity that poses a "realistic possibility of transmission" so that the HIV negative sexual partner has the opportunity to choose whether to assume the risk of being infected with HIV. "HIV non-disclosure" is the term used to describe these cases, i. e., criminal cases involving transmission, or exposure to the realistic possibility of transmission, of HIV through sexual activity.

Key term(s)

CONT

Main target of HIV [human immunodeficiency virus] are two white blood cells; the lymphocyte and the macrophage. In particular, a subset of lymphocytes called T4 cells are infected; the hallmark of AIDS is a depletion of the T4 population. Unlike T4 cells, the macrophage is not killed by HIV. It may serve as a reservoir for the virus.

The less sensitive EIA [Enzyme Immunoassay] is one where the “detuned” assay is made less sensitive by using a higher serum dilution(1/20, 000 compared to 1/400), a shorter specimen incubation period, and a higher cut-off point to be considered positive. If a specimen is tested using both assays(the standard and the detuned assay) and has a positive result in both; the person from whom the specimen was collected is presumed to have been infected for at least a year. However, if the specimen has a positive result using the standard EIA but then is nonreactive using the detuned assay, the patient is presumed to have been infected with the HIV virus for less than six months.

CONT

Any drug that is given through a needle, either in a small dose or with a syringe ("works") or with a longer drip method.

OBS

The term intravenous drug has been used by doctors and drug users, so it can mean different things. The drug is usually put right into the vein, but some drug users "pop" a drug just under the skin. If the needles are shared and the first person has HIV germs, the chances are very high that anyone they share the needle with will become infected from the blood on the needle or in the works. Except for drugs given in a long drip method in hospital, drugs given by needle are now called injection drugs instead of intravenous drugs. This should stop the confusion between needles used by doctors-now called intravenous-and needles used by drugs users-which should be called injections.

Unlike drugs, to which HIV can develop resistance by genetically reshaping its component parts, the engineered (smart bomb) virus attacks a feature that HIV probably cannot alter without rendering itself harmless. In laboratory experiments, it reduced HIV to undetectable levels, raising the possibility of an entirely new kind of therapy for treating AIDS and maybe other viral diseases.

OBS

The virus doesn’t seem to infect any cells other than those infected with HIV. The method consists of reprogramming a virus, changing its natural target so that it kills another virus. However, the therapy based on injection of live viruses is unlikely to be approved easily.

CONT

The HIV-hunting virus has been designed by Dr. John Rose and his colleagues at Yale University School of Medicine this year. They worked with a well-understood virus that infects cattle, known as VSV, or vesicular stomatitis virus and stripped out the gene that makes its protein coat. In its place, they inserted human genes for the two proteins that constitutes the T-cell lack. This created a novel virus, coated with T-cell lock proteins avid to find HIV keys, a sort of HIV in reverse. When added to culture of infected human T-cells, the redesigned viruses sought out and killed them.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Génétique
CONT
