Research is on hairpin catalytic RNA, a catalytic RNA discovered and characterized here in my laboratory at Northern Illinois University. Hairpin catalytic RNA is a molecule which can be engineered to very efficiently cleave target RNA sequences in a unique and efficient reaction. The catalytic RNA can thus be used for the specific down regulation of gene expression since it can be designed to destroy mRNA. Current applications being developed are down regulation of selected genes, including those in the virus HIV-1. Thus it has potential as an AIDS therapeutic. 1, record 1, English, - catalytic%20RNA

A real difference in pathogenicity between HIV-1 and HIV-2 could be significant, and it would be important to determine its molecular basis. The two viruses infect the same populations of cells, binding the same CD4 receptor, but there are some differences in their genetic material and therefore in proteins. One of the most obvious is the presence in HIV-1 of the vpu gene, which is absent in HIV-(and in SIV, for that matter). Perhaps the product of this gene, a small 16-kilodalton peptide, enpathogenicity. Similarly, HIV-2 and SIV contain the vpx gene; HIV-1 does not. If this gene's 12-kilodalton product somehow slows the proliferation or spread of the virus or reduces its ability cells, that too could help to explain why HIV-2 and SIV appear to be less regularly pathogenic than HIV-1. 1, record 2, English, - vpx%20gene

3, record 14, Spanish, - retrovirus

The silent period that follows infection by the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV-1) and precedes seroconversion remains a problem for the screening of blood supply, and knowledge about the mechanism involved in the maintenance of latency is only fragmentary. Using purified nef recombinant protein and six synthetic nef peptides, antibodies to the product of an HIV-1 regulatory gene, the negative regulatory factor(nef) involved in maintenance of proviral latency, were detected by Western blot and radioimmunoassay techniques in HIV-1-seronegative, viral antigen-negative, and virus culture-negative individuals at risk for HIV infection. 2, record 28, English, - negative%2Dregulatory%20factor
