HIVID is the Hoffmann-La Roche brand of zalcitabine [formerly called 2’, 3’-dideoxycytidine(ddC) ], a synthetic pyrimidine nucleoside analogue active against the human immunodeficiency virus(HIV). HIVID is available as film-coated tablets for oral administration in strengths of 0. 375 mg and 0. 750 mg.

La zalcitabine est un analogue de synthèse d'un nucléoside naturel, la 2'-désoxycytidine, dont le groupement hydroxyde en position 3' a été remplacé par un atome d'hydrogène. Dans la cellule, la zalcitabine est convertie par un système enzymatique en son métabolite actif, le didésoxycytidine-5'-triphosphate (ddCTP), qui remplace le substrat naturel, le désoxycytidine-triphosphate (dCTP), de la transcriptase inverse du VIH et qui inhibe la réplication in vitro du VIH-1 en inhibant la synthèse de l'ADN viral.
