Hidden Markov modelling(HMM) is a stochastic method built upon the principles of Markov chains(i. e. the probability of each event only depends on the state attained in the previous event) for modelling a system with unobservable states.... HMM has been utilized in some applications adequately, for example, speech processing and handwriting recognition, and in the past two decades in industrial systems for diagnostics and prognostics.

L'apprentissage de ce modèle consiste à calculer les probabilités de transition entre tous les états du modèle. Cet apprentissage, relativement lourd à mettre en œuvre et coûteux en temps de calcul, se fait au préalable sur les prononciations par un très grand nombre de locuteurs (plusieurs centaines) de tous les mots du vocabulaire dans les conditions d'utilisation. On prend ainsi en considération les variabilités interlocuteurs et les variabilités dues aux canaux acoustiques et électriques. La reconnaissance consiste à trouver le modèle le plus probable susceptible d'avoir produit l'observation mesurée : les trames acoustiques du mot à reconnaître.
