Deposit of ice crystals in the form of scales, needles, feathers and fans and which forms on objects in the same manner as dew, except that the water vapour of the air is transformed directly into ice crystals. 5, record 6, English, - hoar%20frost
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Hoarfrost [is] a deposit of interlocking ice crystals formed by direct sublimation on objects, usually those of small diameter freely exposed to the air, such as tree branches, plant stems and leaf edges, wires, and poles. Also, frost may form on the skin of an aircraft when a cold aircraft flies into warm and moist air or when it passes through air that is supersaturated with water vapor. Hoarfrost is formed similarly to the way dew is formed except that the temperature of the frosted object must be below freezing. Frost forms when air with a dew point below freezing is brought to saturation by cooling. In addition to its formation on freely exposed objects(air hoar), hoarfrost also forms inside unheated buildings and vehicles, in caves, in crevasses(crevasse hoar), on snow surfaces(surface hoar), and in air spaces within snow, especially below a snow crust(depth hoar). Hoarfrost is more fluffy and feathery than rime, which in turn is lighter than glaze. Hoarfrost is designated light or heavy(frost) depending upon the amount and uniformity of deposition. 6, record 6, English, - hoar%20frost
Record number: 6, Textual support number: 1 OBS
Hoarfrost [is] due to nocturnal radiation. Hoarfrost forms during still, clear nights, is small in amount, needlelike in texture, the "needles" approximately perpendicular to the objects on which they occur, and most abundant along the edges. 7, record 6, English, - hoar%20frost

Rain fell as high as 1700 m in some areas, soaking the upper snowpack. Expect a raincrust to form below this elevation as temperatures begin to cool the next few days, and then expect this to be covered with additional new snow. There are a few weak layers in this storm snow and, while warm temperatures are helping heal these weaknesses, whumpfing and cracking was still reported in the Kootenay Pass area on a north facing slope at 2100 m. For the most part new snow is sticking well to the Christmas crust buried 50-70 cm deep. This crust is providing a good bridging layer for the weak facet and surface hoar crystals below the crust, but this layer still remains a concern. 1, record 9, English, - bridging%20layer
Record number: 9, Textual support number: 1 OBS
In avalanche forecasting, a bridging layer [= une couche dure] is a layer of strong (hard) snow that is often quick thick. Once a layer gets to a certain thickness and hardness, it has enough strength to absorb the load that is applied from above, thus preventing this load from triggering a weakness underneath this "bridge." If ever the "bridge" fails then the result is normally a very large avalanche. 2, record 9, English, - bridging%20layer

Shear strength [is] a measure of the bond strength or resistance to slippage between two adjacent snow layers. In a snow slab, the slope parallel component of gravity tends to pull the slab downhill while friction and cohesion(shear strength) between snow surfaces act to hold the slab in place. Slippage between the slab and its undersurface can result, and avalanching can result if gravity induced shear stress between layers exceeds the shear strength bonding snow layers together and the tensile, compressive and flank strengths of the slab are not sufficient to hold it in place. Snow layers composed of surface hoar, low density snow, graupel have very low shear strength. 3, record 12, English, - shear%20strength

Solid faceted crystals are those in which the original crystal form is often no longer discernible and the crystals begin to take on an angular, faceted or striated appearance with straight edges and angular corners beginning to predominate. Faceted grains typically tend to be larger grains and are often significantly larger than the grain from which they formed ... Commonly referred to as "facets" or "sugar snow" these grains tend to be found in softer or weaker snowpack layers. Faceted grains typically form when there is a strong temperature gradient in the snowpack (>1 degree/10 cm). This strong temperature gradient occurs most often in areas where the snowpack is shallow and temperatures are cold. 8, record 29, English, - facet

Record number: 31, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Depth hoar [are] large coarse recrystallized grains of snow that are the end result of the faceting or squaring process within the snowpack, a process driven by temperature gradients. Such crystals are often weak and develop as a result of(locally) strong temperature gradients and resulting vapor pressure differences in the snowpack, especially in shallow snowpacks with cold air temperatures. These grains are formed through re-crystallization of existing snow grains as water vapor is transferred(sublimation and deposition) from warmer regions of higher vapor pressure(near the ground) to colder regions with lower vapor pressure(upper layers closer to the snow surface). 6, record 31, English, - depth%20hoar

Climax Avalanche. ... The distinguishing characteristic of this type of avalanche is that it contains a large proportion of old snow and is caused by conditions that have developed over a period of time--at least one month and possibly an entire season. They occur infrequently because they require an unusual combination of favorable factors. Whenever they occur, the penetration of a climax fracture is always in great depth, usually to the ground. They travel farther and spread out wider than ordinary avalanches on the same slide path. On heavy snow years these avalanches may travel farther than the normal slide path, and destroy forests and structures. 3, record 34, English, - climax%20avalanche

Record number: 42, Textual support number: 1 CONT
3, record 42, French, - gobelet
