Il y a parfois lieu de distinguer entre «entraîneur», «instructeur» et «moniteur». En sports d'équipe, l'entraîneur dirige derrière le banc, choisit l'alignement, oriente le jeu, alors que l'instructeur (par exemple, l'instructeur des gardiens de but) est chargé de périodes d'entraînement, particulièrement de la formation technique et de l'enseignement de jeux et de méthodes pour améliorer les performances. En sports individuels, l'entraîneur d'un athlète cumule les deux fonctions. Dans les sports récréatifs, le moniteur supervise une activité (moniteur de terrain de jeu) ou donne des cours dans un sport donné (l'Alliance des moniteurs de ski du Canada), tout en supervisant les déplacements des inscrits durant les sessions de formation et les périodes d'exercices pratiques.

The National Hockey League's organization and rules explicitly set out the team's formal roles(the coach, team captain, team manager, left wing, center, and goalie). Specific players with particular abilities are hired and trained to fulfill the requirements of those roles by the hockey teams.
