Most wood fuel is used in the less developed southern countries ...

OBS

firewood: term used by Parks Canada.

Record 2 2008-10-20

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
  • Biomass Energy
CONT

A number of wood waste fired boilers are being installed in B.C. While fuel quality wood waste is available in northern B.C. and northern Alberta, the conversion of energy systems to biomass in industries other than [greenhouse] has put a strain on wood waste supply.

Key term(s)
  • wood refuse boiler
  • wood refuse fired boiler

French

Domaine(s)
  • Fours et chaudières (Chauffage)
  • Énergie de la biomasse
CONT

Record 3 2005-02-21

English

Subject field(s)
  • Wood Products
  • Biomass Energy
DEF

Biomass fuel that has been prepared by processing through a "hog"-a mechanical shredder or grinder.

OBS

If produced by primary forest industries, it usually consists of a mixture of bark and wood often with sawdust, shavings or sludge mixed in and is generally wet and fibrous with a high ash content. Also produced from secondary materials such as pallets, construction or demolition wood yielding a dry, mostly wood fuel but often with significant contaminant inorganics.

OBS

hog fuel : term standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Produits du bois
  • Énergie de la biomasse
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Biomass Energy
  • Waste Management
CONT

The most common way to utilize hog fuel is to combust it in large, conventional boilers with heat recovery(as steam) from water-walled boilers. The three principal manufacturers of hog fuel boilers are Foster-Wheeler, Babcox-Wilcox, and Combustion Engineering. Fluidized bed incinerators, such as those available from Copeland Processes Ltd., are also being used to a smaller extent.

Key term(s)
  • fluidized-bed incinerator
  • fluidised bed incinerator

Subject field(s)
  • Combustion and Fuels (Fireplaces)
  • Biomass Energy
CONT

The water cooled cyclonic burner fired with crushed coal on oil may be adapted to firing hog [fuel] in combination with fossil fuels. The all refractory cyclonic burner limited to firing dry pulverized wood waste has been wed as the heat source for dry kilns and rotary dryers but has yet to be demonstrated firing directly into a boiler.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Combustion et combustibles (Foyers)
  • Énergie de la biomasse
