HOGGING [15 records]

Record 1 2025-03-11

English

Subject field(s)
  • Sociology of Human Relations
CONT

"Groundhogging" refers to the tendency to repeatedly date the same type of person, despite past similar relationships not working out. This highlights the futility of going after the same kind of partner and expecting different results, which often leads to the same recurring relationship issues.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Physics
  • Nuclear Fission Reactors
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
CONT

When a turbine comes to rest, after operating, the cooler denser steam tends to collect in the lower half of the cylinder and makes the lower half of the rotor cool quicker than the upper half. This causes the shaft to hog(bend upwards). When at rest and cool, the shaft will begin to sag under its own weight. If the turbine shaft is not rotated, hogging, especially above a critical temperature, can become permanent and the shaft would have to be sent to the manufacturer for heat treatment and straightening.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Physique
  • Réacteurs nucléaires de fission
  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
CONT

Record 5 2003-04-16

English

Subject field(s)
  • Types of Ships and Boats
CONT

A ship that has experienced hogging is said to be hogged. Instead of showing a flat, level hull line, a hogged ship is "curved", with the bow and stern lower than the center of the ship.

OBS

Hogging occurs because the bow and stern of the ship, while carrying a considerable amount of heavy equipment, possesses relatively little buoyancy. The center of the ship, on the other hand, possesses a great deal of buoyancy and may be quite light-weight if the ship is not loaded with heavy cargo or ballast. This unequal distribution of forces, with great weights but little buoyancy fore and aft, and little weight but great buoyancy amidships, leads to deformation of the hull.
