Weight-driven clocks, as the name suggests, are mechanical clocks powered by falling weights that hang on a chain or cable. With the aid of gravity, the weights are pulled down slowly, typically in a period of 7 days. After which, the weights go back up. The chain or cable holding the weight needs to be manually pulled up or wound using a crank to start another cycle. 1, record 1, English, - weight%2Ddriven%20clock

Usually, a ladder allows fish to swim past a barrier aided by river water flowing in from the top.... work is being done to create an artificial stream of water through the fish ladder. Starting with a series of large pumps supplying water or "attractant flow[, "] fish looking for an alternative route over the slide will be lured upstream into the pools. As fish swim further, they will end up in a holding pool at the same elevation as the fish pump. Addition of manures increases fertility of sandy soils by slowly recycling nutrients. lis pendens(L. "a pending lawsuit") … is a useful LATINISM that has given its name to a notice required in some jurisdictions to warn all persons that certain property is the subject matter of litigation, and that any interests acquired during the pendency of the suit must be subject to the outcome of the litigation. Traditionally this notice was called the notice of lis pendens, but 20th century American lawyers have shortened the phrase to merely lis pendens. E. g., "The defendant says that the plaintiff's harsh conduct in holding up a whole subdivision by the lis pendens in this action disentitles him to relief. "Hostility" is the very marrow of adverse possession; it has even redundantly been called adversity. To say that possession is hostile should mean nothing more than that it is without permission of the one legally empowered to give possession, usually the owner. Any kind of permissive use, as by a tenant, licensee, contract purchaser in possession, or easement holder is rightful, not hostile. The better view is that unexplained possession is presumed hostile, so that it is up to the one who wished to do so to establish that it is rightful. Rising to the trot means alternating rhythmically between full seat and half-seat(three-point and two-point).... Your half-seat will be easy if your stirrups are the correct length, and impossible if they aren’t-so DO check this before you begin! When you ride in a half-seat, your legs should be relaxed, KNEES BENT, your heels low, your head up with eyes looking forward, and your hands forward holding the mane or a neckstrap(essential to helping you learn to keep your balance without hurting your horse's mouth). 3, record 31, English, - half%20seat

The "buying hedge" protects against price increases. Suppose an exporter sells a cargo of grain for delivery in six months. If the exporter buys the grain upon receipt of the order, to ensure a supply at a known price, capital would be tied up and storage, insurance and interest costs incurred. If [he] waits until the delivery date to buy the grain, there is the risk of a price increase. However, by buying a contract in the futures market, [he] establishes the price and ensures a supply to meet his commitment, without paying holding costs other than those built into the price. 8, record 33, English, - buying%20hedge

1, record 33, French, - contrepartie%20d%27achat

It is increasingly used in corespun yarn and as plaiting yarn to replace textured nylon for better size range, improved fit, and comfort. 1, record 38, English, - elastomeric%20fiber

"Tired". A wine that is not holding up well. The old zip has gone. Past its prime, the wine lacks vitality and muscle to sustain it. The fruit has all but vanished. Tannin and/or acid are petering out. The wine cannot develop or improve. A tired wine is sometimes attributable to old age, sometimes not : poor storage, sloppy vinification methods, faulty handling along the line of distribution could be the cause, among other factors. Garden and landscape design deals with the treatment of land areas not covered by buildings, when those areas are considered important to visual experience, with or without utilitarian function.... Garden and landscape design... works with a wide range of natural and processed materials capable of holding up well in the specific local climatic conditions of the site. These materials include earth, rock, water, and plants, either existing on the site or brought in; and construction materials such as concrete, stone, brick, wood, tile, metal, and glass. 1, record 53, English, - garden%20design

Using a portable toilet can have its unpleasant moments. The worst is what people in the trade call "blowback"-wastes shooting up from the toilet bowl. The whole mess is caused by a pressure buildup in the holding tanks of the flushable models. Without prior release, pressure from the waste tank can literally blow wastes up and out when you try to flush them through the bowl opening. 1, record 54, English, - blowback

1, record 54, French, - rejet%20des%20mati%C3%A8res%20f%C3%A9cales

The President is eyeing trust powers and the Chairman of the Board sees a link to the deposit-taking institution as a part of the logical long-term plan. Both are optimistic that long overdue revisions to regulations might be completed by year end with some relaxation governing rules on cross-ownership. Mutual companies, unlike shareholder-owned companies, are not permitted to create upstream holding companies that could link them to other financial services firms, the way power financial corporations are set up. 2, record 55, English, - cross%2Downership

Resin Anchored Bolts.(...) It has been found that the use of resins will increase significantly the holding ability of expansion anchors. Two types of resin packages are available. In one type, the resin and catalyst are at opposite ends of a plastic envelope separated by a clip. The clip is removed and the package kneaded to mix the components. Then the package is thrust up the hole and a bolt with a mechanical anchor is inserted; in tightening the package will burst and the resin will ooze around the anchor. The other type is a glass capsule where resin and quartz granulars are contained in an outer glass capsule and the catalyst is in an inner tube.(...) Bolt ends need no threading for this anchorage. 1, record 56, English, - resin%20anchored%20bolt

1, record 56, French, - boulon%20%C3%A0%20la%20r%C3%A9sine
