There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission. "Direct transmission" is considered the more precise of the two, as it offers less error in measuring composition and compensates for surface roughness. To measure soil density, for example, the source is placed in a tube and inserted beneath the surface through a punched access hole. Radiation is then transmitted from the source to a detector on the base of the gauge. The density of the soil is determined by the radiation level at the detector. 1, record 1, English, - direct%20transmission%20method

1, record 1, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20transmission%20directe

There are two basic methods of measuring material with portable gauges, backscatter and direct transmission.... The "backscatter method" eliminates the need for an access hole by allowing both the source and detector to remain on the surface. Radiation is directed beneath the surface, and some radiation is reflected, or "scattered" back to the gauge detector by the surface material. This method... is... insensitive to density variations beyond a depth of 2 to 3 inches. However, the backscatter method is quicker than the direct transmission, and is useful when measuring uniform material such as asphalt paving. 1, record 2, English, - backscatter%20method

1, record 2, French, - m%C3%A9thode%20de%20r%C3%A9trodiffusion

A pneumatic rate-of-rise spot detector consists of a small dome-shaped air chamber with a flexible metal diaphragm in the base. A small metering hole allows air to enter and exit the chamber during normal rise and fall of atmospheric temperature and barometric pressure. In the heat of a fire, however, the air within the chamber expands faster than it can escape through the metering hole. This expansion causes the pressure within the chamber to increase, forcing the metal diaphragm against contact points in the alarm circuit. An alarm signal to the system control unit results. This type of detector is most often combined in one unit that also has fixed-temperature capability. 1, record 3, English, - pneumatic%20rate%2Dof%2Drise%20spot%20detector

1, record 3, French, - d%C3%A9tecteur%20ponctuel%20thermov%C3%A9locim%C3%A9trique%20pneumatique

A special radioactivity log that has been developed for open-hole surveying that responds principally to variations in the specific gravity of the formations. It is a contact log(i. e., the instrument is held against the wall of the hole). The logging tool emits neutrons and then measures the secondary gamma radiation that is scattered back to the detector in the instrument. 2, record 4, English, - density%20log
