Record 1 2021-07-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Extraction
DEF

The preparatory phase of oil and gas extraction from wells, including installation of equipment and other activities.

CONT

Completion involves cleaning out the well, running steel casing and tubing into the hole, adding permanent surface control equipment, and perforating the casing so oil or gas can flow into the well and be brought to the surface.

CONT

The method of well completion employed by the operator depends on the individual characteristics of the producing formation or formations. These techniques may be classified as: (1) open-hole completions, (2) conventional perforated completions, (3) sand-exclusion completions, (4) tubingless completions, (5) multiple completions, and (6) miniaturized completions.

OBS

comp: the abbreviation for ... completion; used in drilling reports.

OBS

DEF

A simple valve consisting of a tapered plug pierced with a hole through which liquid is able to flow.

CONT

There are two principal objections to the plug valve: One arises from the possible water hammer that may result from too quick manipulation of the valve. The other is the difficulty resulting when the key becomes worn; the valve may leak or jam and it is difficult to make repairs.

OBS

Rotation of the plug through 90° shuts off the flow by blocking it with the undrilled part of the plug.

The viscosity is reported as the time of flow for the cupful to empty through the hole; it is reported in seconds for the continuous flow through the hole to break, signifying that the cup is essentially empty; the temperature for testing the material is critical and should be specified and noted.

The movement of a free electron from atom to atom leaves a hole in the atom it left. This hole is quickly filled by another free electron. As this movement is transmitted throughout the conductor, an electric current is created from the negative to the positive. At the same time, the "hole" has been moved backward in the conductor as one free electron after another takes its place in a sort of chain reaction. "Hole flow" is from positive to negative. Current flow in a transistor, then, may be either electron movement or hole flow, depending on the type of material, and this determines the type of transistor it is as well.

DEF

A continuous measurement of formation properties with electrically powered instruments to infer properties and make decisions about drilling and production operations ...

CONT

A log is the recording of one physical property of the formation crossed through by a borehole or of the geometric characteristics of the hole or casing or the flow behavior of a well as a function of depth. Wireline logging is performed with a sonde or probe lowered into the borehole or well, usually after the drillstring has been withdrawn.

OBS

Measurements include electrical properties ... sonic properties, active and passive nuclear measurements, dimensional measurements of the wellbore, formation fluid sampling, formation pressure measurement, wireline-conveyed sidewall coring tools, and others. In wireline measurements, the logging tool (or sonde) is lowered into the open wellbore on a multiple conductor, contra-helically armored wireline. Once lowered to the bottom of the interval of interest, the measurements are taken on the way out of the wellbore. This is done in an attempt to maintain tension on the cable (which stretches) as constant as possible for depth correlation purposes ... Most wireline measurements are recorded continuously even though the sonde is moving.

The plasma-keyhole method is a welding process where the gas flow is restricted through a reduction of the gas orifice. This increases the gas velocity and the arc temperature. Severe constriction of the gas flow produces a cutting arc, which is utilised in plasma arc cutting(PAC). The plasma arc blows a hole through the joint of the plate. Behind the hole the molten metal flows together filling the hole, due to the gravity forces, surface tension and the gas pressure from the shielding gas.
