The International Day for Biological Diversity(or World Biodiversity Day) is a UN-sanctioned international holiday for the promotion of biodiversity issues. It is currently held on May 22. From its creation by the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly in 1993 until 2000, it was held on December 29 to celebrate the day the Convention on Biological Diversity went into effect. In December of 2000, the date was shifted to commemorate the adoption of the Convention on May 22, 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit, partly to avoid the many other holidays that occur in late December.

The term May Day can refer to any of several traditional secular, Christian, or pagan holidays celebrated either on 1 May itself or another day at the beginning of May and having as a common element the commemoration of the height of spring or the coming of summer. May Day is now more commonly celebrated as a commemoration of the Haymarket Riot of 1886 in Chicago, Illinois, United States which occurred on May 4th but was the culmination of labor unrest which began on May 1. The date consequently became established as an anarchist and socialist holiday during the 20th century, and in these circles it is often known as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day. In this form, May Day has become an International celebration of the social and economic achievements of the working class and labor movement.
