A hollow beam whose cross-section is shaped like a box. It uses material where it is most highly stressed both by bending moments and by twisting moments. Consequently it is used for large spans and for locations where eccentric loading etc. causes torsion.

... five Italians submitted a design for a pair of reinforced and pre-stressed slim concrete arches, each of 130 foot spans, hinged at the spring lines. They were set delicately between the original 19th-century abutments at the river bank and central pier, as the programme required these remnants to be integrated in the new bridge design. The double arch supported a hollow girder deck with a central span of 180 feet.
