A growth stage of grasses when the main stem begins to elongate.

CONT

Stem elongation or jointing occurs as a result of internode elongation. Usually a plant has about five to six leaves on the main shoot when internode elongation first begins. Throughout development, the lower four nodes remain in the crown. The fifth node may remain in the crown or be elevated slightly and nodes six and seven are generally elevated above the soil. The elongating internode is hollow between the crown and the elevated growing point, except in solid stem varieties. Rapid stem or internode elongation brings the developing head above the soil surface. Each elongating internode becomes progressively longer and eventually leads to head emergence.

Admiral Fitzroy's(English) storm signal [1864] consists of a hollow cylinder and cone, either of which, or both simultaneously, may be suspended from a mast or staff so as to be visible to ships in port or in a roadstead. Their positions and grouping denote the probable direction of the wind in an approaching storm. Thus : cone point upward to the right of the staff=northerly gale; cone point downward to the left of the staff=southerly gale; cylinder above=expect dangerous winds from both quarters successively; upright cone above cylinder=Dangerous wind expected from the north; reversed cone below cylinder=dangerous wind expected from the south; and so on.

Signals are hoisted on masts in ports to indicate the approach of a gale and the direction from which it will blow.

The directional gyroscope forms a standard reference for the pilot and navigator. It is a three-frame gyroscope with its spin axis in the horizontal plane. As soon as tilt develops, a switch is closed between the gyroscope housing and the vertical gimbal ring and a motor introduces a torque in the horizontal plane that causes the gyroscope to precess back toward the horizontal.

The source of power for the gyro is the engine-driven vacuum pump(or venturi) which sucks air from the rear of the instrument case. This causes air under atmospheric pressure to pass through the filtering system, thence through an air bearing into the hollow vertical gimbal ring. The air then passes through the air nozzle and jets, striking the rotor at a point just above the plane of the horizontal gimbal.

Si, au contraire, on fixe l'anneau vertical dans un plan perpendiculaire au plan méridien, l'axe de rotation ne pourra plus se déplacer que dans ce plan méridien.
