The second book of the set of works by the CIDECT [Committee International for the Development and the Study of Tubular construction] under the general title "Construction with Hollow Steel Sections" is dedicated to phenomena of instability : buckling, distortion, spreading. Because of the shape of its section and the particularly favourable distribution of matter in the straight section, a hollow profile, of circular or rectangular shape, behaves distinctly better than an open profile section under the demands of compression. In remaining within the limits of the relation of the diameter or the width of side divided by the thickness of partition, given in this dimensioning guide, the local hollow profile distortion can be disregarded. On the other hand, the resistance to spreading is, in practice, not verified because hollow profiles possess a distinctly larger polar rigidity than open section profiles. 1, record 1, English, - open%20section%20profile

2, record 1, French, - profil%20ouvert

Profile. A product of uniform cross-section along its whole length, with a cross-section other than rod, bar, wire, tube, sheet or strip, supplied in straight lengths or in coiled form. According to the form of its cross-section, it is called :-hollow profile : the cross-section other than tube enclosing one or more complete voids;-solid profile : the cross-section does not enclose any complete void. The cross-sections are formed by extruding, rolling, roll-forming, or drawing, either exclusively or in combination. 4, record 3, English, - structural%20shape

The X-wing has emerged from the circulation controlled rotor(CCR) in which a hollow blade of roughly oval aerofoil section, that is, without a real lifting profile at all, can be made to lift effectively by blowing a layer of air through a slot and across the curved Coanda surface which forms the trailing-edge. While this in itself produces lift, the air jet can be so modulated as the rotor turns that it has the same effect as the cyclic pitch changing of the normal rotor. Finally, a further jet can be blown through a second slot near the leading-edge of the blade so that it restores the lost lift of the retreating blade. This fore-and-aft blowing is the key to the stopped-rotor X-wing. 1, record 4, English, - circulation%20controlled%20rotor
