The second book of the set of works by the CIDECT [Committee International for the Development and the Study of Tubular construction] under the general title "Construction with Hollow Steel Sections" is dedicated to phenomena of instability : buckling, distortion, spreading. Because of the shape of its section and the particularly favourable distribution of matter in the straight section, a hollow profile, of circular or rectangular shape, behaves distinctly better than an open profile section under the demands of compression. In remaining within the limits of the relation of the diameter or the width of side divided by the thickness of partition, given in this dimensioning guide, the local hollow profile distortion can be disregarded. On the other hand, the resistance to spreading is, in practice, not verified because hollow profiles possess a distinctly larger polar rigidity than open section profiles. 1, record 4, English, - open%20section%20profile

Mercury flotation. The directive force of any gyrocompass is small when nearly on the meridian. It is therefore necessary to suspend it in as nearly a frictionless support as possible. This is accomplished by supporting the sensitive element on a hollow steel sphere which floats in a concentric tank of mercury... The sphere should clear the bottom of the tank by 3/16 in. For convenience in checking this position, a line has been placed on the contact support tube. This line is level with the topmost surface of the sensitive element when the flotation is correct. 3, record 14, English, - flotation

This outer wound carbon cartridge removes undesirable tasted, odors, sediment, discoloration and chemicals from water, hydrocarbon gases and other industrial fluids. It also provides organic removal from plating, acid and alkaline solutions. This economical carbon cartridge is actually three filters in one. It first provides filtration through an outer winding, then through a layer of activated granular carbon and finally through a 5 micron polishing inner winding. Choices of core materials and wound materials make Penguin’s Style GC cartridges a versatile and economical choice for all carbon filtration needs. 2, record 15, English, - wound%20fabric

The fuel oil is introduced by means of a stationary fuel tube extending through the centre of the hollow main shaft of the burner into the atomizing cup.... In the Ray rotary oil burner, the oil is introduced into the tail end of the fuel tube, passes through the tube, and flows out of the fuel tip into the back portion of the atomizing cup.
