A growth stage of grasses when the main stem begins to elongate.

Stem elongation or jointing occurs as a result of internode elongation. Usually a plant has about five to six leaves on the main shoot when internode elongation first begins. Throughout development, the lower four nodes remain in the crown. The fifth node may remain in the crown or be elevated slightly and nodes six and seven are generally elevated above the soil. The elongating internode is hollow between the crown and the elevated growing point, except in solid stem varieties. Rapid stem or internode elongation brings the developing head above the soil surface. Each elongating internode becomes progressively longer and eventually leads to head emergence.

Cuttings from the drilling process are brought to the surface by the action of the augers.... Hollow-stem augers are similar to solid-stem augers in design, except that drill rods can pass through the auger sections.... Because the flights are hollow, they can be used as temporary casing to hold the hole open while the permanent casing is installed. Wells drilled with hollow-stem augers have been used to construct water supply wells, but they are more often used to construct monitoring wells.

Ants live in the hollow between the rhizome and the bark.

Highly specialized domatia are found in southeast Asian species of the family Rubiaceae. These relatives of coffee and gardenias are the classic ant-fed ant-house plants.... The domatium of these epiphytes is the base of the stem which becomes enlarged into a tuber. Hollow, interconnected chambers form within the tuber as tissue dies back. The chambers have entrance holes which allow the ants access, and in some cases, tiny pores further ventilate the chambers... Nutrients released by decay of the ants’ waste, mostly leftover insect pieces, are absorbed by special "warts" inside the chambers...
