CONT

[The authors] have studied the use of image plane holograms in holographic microscopy. [Their] goal is to reduce the amount of speckle by reducing the degree of spatial coherence needed to reconstruct the image, while retaining the resolution needed to study microscopic objects.

If a plane-wave reference is used for recording and for reconstruction, then the reconstructed image will coincide with the magnified image of the object in amplitude, although the phase will contain the curvature due to the imaging lens. Alternatively, holographic interference of the object and the plane-wave reference can be formed first and its magnified image projected near the hologram plane...

It is very recently reported that high resolution electron-holography does indeed show that the contrast in the holographic side-band images is three to five times higher than the contrast in the completely unfiltered centre-band image.... Any strictly elastic diffuse scattering from defects or amorphous surface films would still be present in the side-band holograms.

The endoscope observes macroscopic objects. … imaging characteristics were studied at distances between 20 and 400 mm. … researchers imaged inside the cavities of a sweet pepper commonly used as a phantom for biomedically relevant conditions. The image definition was boosted to 100, 000 pixels per frame, which is an order of magnitude larger than previous holographic endoscopes and can also reach the definition of modern video endoscopes.

The image recorded on the holographic plate is called a hologram of the target, which carries both the amplitude and phase of the returned, scattered beam from the target. The first exposure of the holographic plate by the reference beam results in a reference hologram, while the second exposure by the returned beam imposes all changes of the target to the reference hologram.

Another new class of testing tool allows engineers to observe patterns of stress and strain on a spinning disc. Pulsed-laser holography, one of these new methods, uses rapid sequences of holographic "snapshots" to create holograms which can show minute surface distortions caused by vibration. An optical "derotator", consisting of a prism rotating at half the speed of the specimen, freezes the movement of the disc so that the image can be processed.
