La méthode est utilisée dans le contrôle non destructif, par exemple, celui de pièces en composites. Alors que l'interférométrie classique mesure la déformation d'une pièce soumise à une contrainte, la shéarographie mesure la dérivée de cette déformation. Elle permet ainsi d'éliminer les déplacements d'ensemble de la pièce examinée. Couplée à une caméra CCD, la shéarographie peut fonctionner par endoscopie (la lumière étant véhiculée par fibre optique) afin de contrôler des pièces difficiles d'accès.
