The Ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport is mainly responsible for school age children and carries out this responsibility in its system during the school year. Parents can obtain a place at the reduced contribution--$7 a day--for childcare for a child of school age. The Ministère de la Famille, des Aînés et de la Condition féminine plays an auxiliary role with respect to children attending kindergarten or elementary school and who don’t have access to childcare services in a school day care environment. Childcare centres, subsidized day care centres and home childcare providers can use places they have available to receive children going to kindergarten or elementary school who don’t attend day care in their school.

Le ministère de l'Éducation, du Loisir et du Sport du Québec est le premier responsable de la clientèle d'âge scolaire et il exerce sa responsabilité dans son réseau durant l'année scolaire. Le parent peut bénéficier d'une place à contribution réduite pour la garde d'un enfant d'âge scolaire au coût de 7 $ par jour. Par ailleurs, le ministère de la Famille, des Aînés et de la Condition féminine joue un rôle subsidiaire auprès des enfants qui fréquentent les classes de la maternelle ou du primaire et qui n'ont pas accès à des services de garde en milieu scolaire. Les centres de la petite enfance, les garderies subventionnées et les responsables d'un service de garde peuvent utiliser leurs places disponibles pour recevoir des enfants de la maternelle ou du primaire qui ne peuvent bénéficier d'un service de garde à l'école qu'ils fréquentent.

The Canadian Association for Young Children(CAYC) was granted it's Federal Charter in 1974. To this day, the CAYC, is the only national association specifically concerned with the well being of children, birth through age nine-at home, in preschool settings and at school. The CAYC exists to provide a voice on critical issues related to the quality of life of all young children and families.
