Cuando hablamos de Wi-Fi nos referimos a una de las tecnologías de comunicación inalámbrica más utilizada hoy en día. Wi-Fi es una abreviatura de Wireless Fidelity, también llamada [...] estándar IEEE 802.11.

Muchas marcas registradas se han ido convirtiendo, por el uso que de ellas han hecho los hablantes, en sustantivos comunes con sentido genérico. [...] Lo mismo ha pasado con wifi, que a partir de la marca Wi-Fi, ha pasado a ser utilizado como un sustantivo común con el que se alude a cierta tecnología de comunicación inalámbrica [...] y también como el adjetivo correspondiente [...] Por tratarse de un término ya incorporado al español (aunque aún no recogido por los principales diccionarios), la Fundéu BBVA recomienda que se escriba con iniciales minúsculas y en letra redonda, [...] sin el guión intermedio que aparece en la marca original: "wifi".

[...] el sustantivo wifi es tanto masculino como femenino, por lo que son correctas frases que se encuentran en los medios de comunicación como «La wifi es una tecnología mucho más barata» o «El wifi se convertiría en una realidad en todas las áreas metropolitanas».
