The back-to-the-land movement was a social movement based around the idea of living a self-sufficient life close to nature. It was characterized by the idea that everyday life is methodically practiced and based on a set of moral values or choices. For many people homesteading became a spiritual practice, giving meaning to daily life through adhering to values of simplicity and anti-consumerism.

The back-to-the-land movement was a migration from cities to rural areas that took place in the United States mainly in the 1960s and early 1970s.

When Dr. Mary Percy left civilized England in 1929 for the wilds of northern Alberta, the clock seemed to turn back a century. Battle River Prairie had no roads, no electricity, no telegraph. She became the first and only doctor in Canada's last homesteading area. Articulate, witty and outspoken at 90 years of age, the doctor is a gifted storyteller, recalling harrowing exepriences as a practitioner of frontier medicine in this film produced by the National Film Board of Canada.
