Recent advances in atmospheric chemistry demonstrate that aerosol surfaces play a very important role in their chemistry. In particular, organic aerosol is aged and processed through photochemical and radical oxidation reactions. These reactions likely affect each aerosol particle uniquely, resulting in a patchwork of molecules and chemical functionalities even on originally homogeneous aerosol. The end result of these reactions is likely a surface with mixed hydrophilic and hydrophobic character. 2, record 1, English, - homogeneous%20aerosol

A team ran a series of computer simulations of stratospheric chemistry using standard homogeneous reactions, and found very little impact of trace gases produced by human activities. But when they adjusted the model to take account of non-standard chemistry, it responded by indicating a 16 percent drop in ozone concentrations by the year 2060. 3, record 2, English, - homogeneous%20chemical%20reaction

Heterogeneous chemistry is, it seems, the key to understanding the preconditioning of the Antarctic stratosphere during the polar winter. Virtually all calculations of ozone depletion at other latitudes have so far used only homogeneous chemistry, assuming all the chemicals involved were present as gases. 1, record 3, English, - heterogeneous%20chemistry
