In order to model the progress of an epidemic in a large population, the population diversity must be reduced to a few key characteristics which are relevant to the infection under consideration. For example, for most common childhood diseases that confer long-lasting immunity, it makes sense to divide the population into those who are susceptible to the disease, those who are infected and those who have recovered and are immune. These subdivisions of the population are called compartments ... The SIR model labels these three compartments S = number susceptible, I =number infectious, and R =number recovered (immune). This is a good and simple model for many infectious diseases including measles, mumps and rubella. 4, record 7, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

[The Kermack-McKendrick model] was proposed to explain the rapid rise and fall in the number of infected patients observed in epidemics such as the plague(London 1665-1666, Bombay 1906) and cholera(London 1865). It assumes that the population size is fixed(i. e., no births, deaths due to disease, or deaths by natural causes), incubation period of the infectious agent is instantaneous, and duration of infectivity is same as length of the disease. It also assumes a completely homogeneous population with no age, spatial, or social structure. 3, record 7, English, - susceptible%2Dinfected%2Drecovered%20model

Today nearly 2, 000 different enzymes are known. Many have been isolated in pure homogeneous form, and at least 200 have been crystallized.... NMR studies of globular proteins in solution give data consistent with the crystal structure, as has been amply demonstrated for lysozyme. However, where there is an equilibrium among two or more conformations of the enzyme in solution, crystallization may select out only one of the conformations. [alpha]-Chymotrypsin has a substantial fraction of an inactive conformation present under the conditions of crystallization, but only the active form of the enzyme crystallizes. An allosteric effector molecule that changes the conformation of the protein in solution may have no effect on the crystalline protein, as has been found, for example, with phosphorylase b. The enzyme is frozen in one conformation, with the crystal lattice forces preventing any conformational change. On the other hand, the addition of an effector to phosphorylase a causes the crystals first to crack and then to anneal, giving crystals of the enzyme in a second conformation. 2, record 11, English, - crystallize

Comme la solubilité des protéines dépend du pH, de la température, de la présence d'ions métalliques ou de petites molécules qui se fixent sur la protéine, etc., des centaines de tests sont souvent nécessaires pour mettre au point une cristallisation. 2, record 11, French, - cristalliser

DOW Styrofoam is used for thermally insulating foundations, cellars, and roofs and for ground-frost protection of soil structures. The products are made of extruded blue cellular polystyrene. During the manufacturing of DOW Styrofoam products, the molten polystyrene is extruded through the die under extreme pressure after which it expands to the desired thickness. Dow's manufacturing process produces a homogeneous cellular structure giving the encapsulated final product outstanding thermal insulating properties. 2, record 16, English, - cellular%20polystyrene
