La machine homopolaire constitue un type particulier de machine synchrone dans laquelle l'enroulement triphasé ainsi que l'enroulement d'excitation alimenté en courant continu se trouvent montés sur la partie fixe de la machine. Le rotor dentelé provoque, lorsqu'il tourne dans l'enroulement triphasé du stator, des fluctuations du flux magnétique, donnant lieu à une tension.
