A synthetic thermoplastic polymer made by polymerizing 1,3-butadiene with a stereospecific organometallic catalyst (butyl lithium), though other catalysts such as titanium tetrachloride and aluminum iodide may be used.

Oil-extendable synthetic elastomer polymer made from butadiene; resilience is similar to natural rubber; it is blended with natural rubber for use in tire and other rubber products.

The cis-isomer, which is similar to natural rubber, is used in tire treads due to its abrasion and crack resistance and low heat build-up. Large quantities are also used as blends in SBR rubber. The trans-isomer resembles gutta percha and has limited utility. Liquid polybutadiene, which is sodium-catalyzed, has specialty uses as a coating resin. It is cured with organic peroxides.

Block copolymers are organic polymers that are made up of two or more different monomer types, which are segregated into groups or blocks. When two mono-polymers are physically mixed together they will have a tendency to phase separate on a macroscopic scale. This is caused by the molecules’ drive toward the lowest possible interaction energy, which occurs when the individual polymer molecules are coagulated with other molecules of the same polymeric makeup.

The product of polymerization of one monomer is called a homopolymer, monopolymer or simply a polymer. When two monomers are polymerized simultaneously the product is called a copolymer. The term terpolymer is sometimes used for polymerization products of three monomers.

When a film is biaxially oriented, it is mechanically stretched in directions which are at right angles to each other. Epichlorohydrin rubber. This synthetic rubber includes two epichlorohydrin-based elastomers which are saturated, high-molecular-weight, aliphatic polyethers with chloromethyl side chains. The two types include a homopolymer(CO) and a copolymer of epichlorohydrin and ethylene oxide(ECO). These rubbers are vulcanized with a variety of reagents that react difunctionally with the chloromethyl group, including diamines, urea, thioureas, 2-mercaptoimidazoline, and ammonium salts.
