Le poulain, durant toute sa croissance in utero et pendant quelques minutes après sa naissance possède une membrane autour de ses sabots appelée l'éponychium. Chez les chevaux, elle est développée pour protéger les organes et l'utérus de la mère et se résorbe immédiatement après la naissance sans attirer les prédateurs pour que le poulain puisse se mouvoir très rapidement.
