Used primarily in television, spinoffs take advantage of a character that producers already know has audience appeal. In this way, the producers of the new show hope to capture a substantial portion of the old show's audience.

En général, ce type de rapport entre deux séries donne souvent naissance à des «cross-over».

Dans le cas d'un feuilleton télévisé, -soit une trame segmentée en épisodes dont chacun est la suite du précédent- qui s'inspirerait d'un ou plusieurs personnages secondaires d'un précédent feuilleton, on utilisera alors le vocable «feuilleton dérivé». On réserve en effet le terme «série» à une succession d'histoires indépendantes ayant pour seul lien la présence d'un ou plusieurs personnages récurrents.
