This version of the province's Arms was adopted in 1966, at which time the crest of a royal crown was added above the shield and the scroll inscribed with the motto "SPEM REDUXIT" was incorporated below the shield. The motto, meaning "Hope was restored, "is taken from the original Great Seal of the province which was used until Confederation. It refers to the new hope of the Loyalists who came to the province after the American War of Independence.
