Trawling questionnaire: This term commonly refers to interview forms designed to capture a wide range of exposures. They are sometimes called “hypothesis-generating” or ... shotgun questionnaires. These forms may be designed with embedded questions focused on disease-specific hypotheses, which may serve to consolidate the hypothesis generation and testing processes into a single step. For instance, the trawling questionnaire for an outbreak of E. coli O157:H7 may contain questions about standard transmission mechanisms for this agent such as hamburger consumption, day-care attendance, recreational pool use, animal exposures ... 1, record 5, English, - trawling%20questionnaire

The nurses asked those who had become ill a battery of questions from a 20-page survey known as a "shotgun" questionnaire that explores potential sources of disease, from animal contact to sources of drinking water to attendance at various locations that could be contaminated. The nurses went through what each person had eaten during the week before the illness struck to attempt to identify what caused the outbreak... The goal was to find a common element, whether it was a food item or some kind of contact or common location. "It's like shooting in a barrel hoping to hit something, "... A shortchange artist prefers to operate on careless or inexperienced cashiers. His goal is to confuse the cashier during a money transaction by changing his mind in the middle of a purchase. One common method used by a shortchange artist is to make a $. 50 purchase and pay with a $20 bill, then suddenly changes his mind and decides to pay with a $1. 00 bill. He will hand back the change from the $20 bill after pocketing $10 and produce the $1. 00 bill to buy the item. An experienced cashier won’t realize ten dollars is missing from the $20 change. During the exchange of money, the shortchange artist usually tries to take the cashier's mind from her work by talking about his job, family, sad story, etc. hoping the cashier won’t notice the missing $10 bill. 6, record 6, English, - shortchange%20artist

2, record 13, French, - Un%20zoo%20la%20nuit

By giving a cognitive enhancer, with minimal side effects, to people without a mental deficit, they may end up with cognitive credit, i. e. smarter. Some elements within the scientific establishment continue to deny the potential of cognitive enhancers. They believe that the optimal brain cannot be improved upon by throwing in, a "chemical spanner". But optimal memory can be improved, for example, by employing "mnemonics", which is as "artificial" as a chemical lift from a pill. Would they also resist cognitive enhancement by other artificial methods such as food-a "chemical spanner" if ever there was one-and education? The United States Congress has declared the 1990s the "Decade of the Brain". Smart drugs will, if regulated, treat a recently officially recognized disease, the Age-Associated Memory Impairment(AAMI)-a noticeable mental decline due to the normal ageing process. A futures analyst, Decision Resources, predicts that smart drugs could benefit 600 million people this decade, including 60 million people with AAMI, 20 million students who want to improve scholastic performance, and 270 million people hoping to improve their efficiency at work(Suppl. The World in 1994). 1, record 29, English, - cognitive%20enhancement

The SEMP ship Yamato 1 is packed with the huge power and refrigeration systems needed to run it. A ten-man crew squeezes into a small cockpit at the front. Despite these limitations, the Japanese are hoping that SEMP systems will become smaller and more powerful leading to a new generation of fast passenger ferries and cargo ships. Unlike today's ships they will be highly manoeuvrable : by reversing the polarity of both thrusters, a SEMP ship should be able to come rapidly to a halt. Reversing just one drive would make it turn on a yen. It would also be eerily quiet. This has prompted the America's IEEE to try to fit SEMP drives into a submarine-echoes, as it were, of the "caterpillar drive" used by the silent submarine in the film "The Hunt for Red October". 1, record 30, English, - SEMP%20ship
