The localizer signal emitted from the transmitter site at the far end of the runway is confined within an angular width between 3° and 6°. The localizer provides course guidance throughout the descent path to the runway threshold from a distance of 18 NM [nautical miles] from the antenna between a height of 1000 ft above the highest terrain along the approach path and 4500 ft above the elevation of the antenna site.

In a similar manner as the LOC signal, the GS [glide slope] sends a UHF [ultra high frequency] carrier signal with the same two 90-Hz and 150-Hz sideband frequencies that aircraft instruments determine as above or below the desired glide path. This is approximately 3 degrees to the horizon which gives the aircraft a descent rate of approximately 500 feet per minute.

The turn rate of 3° per second normally used by aircraft operating at less than 250 kt [knots].

The attitude indicator shows rotation about both the longitudinal axis to indicate the degree of bank, and about the lateral axis to indicate pitch(nose up, level or nose down)... The principal parts of interest to the pilot are : The miniature wings attached to the case remain parallel to the wings of the aircraft. The horizon bar which separates the top(light) and bottom(dark) halves to the ball. The degree marks on the upper periphery of the dial. The first 3 on both sides of center are 10 degrees apart, then 60 degree bank marks, and 90 degree bank marks. Fifteen degrees of bank is called a standard rate turn.

The turn indicator indicates the rate of the turn, not the amount of the turn. Thus a standard rate, or rate one, turn will give a rate of turn of 3 degrees per second, or 360 degrees in two minutes.

Predominantly green colouration of short duration, often in the form of a flash, seen at the extreme upper edge of a luminary (Sun, Moon, or even a planet) when disappearing below or appearing above the horizon.

CONT

When the sun sets, sometimes the last bit of light from the disk itself is an emerald green. The same is true of the first bit of light from the rising sun. This phenomenon is known as the "green flash" or "green ray". It is not an optical illusion. The green flash is common and will be visible any time the sun is rises or sets on a "clear", "unobstructed", and "low" horizon.... The explanation for the green flash is thus, 1) refraction separates the solar images by color; 2) at just the right instant, the red image has set, 3) the yellow image is absorbed; and 4) the blue image is scattered away. We are left with the upper limb of the green image. Because the green flash is primarily a refraction effect, it lasts longer and is easier to see from a mountain top than from sea level.

Ce phénomène de réfraction, qui ne se produit que lorsque l'atmosphère est extrêmement pure et qu'il y a très peu de particules pouvant créer de la diffraction ou dispersion, apparaît très rarement au lever ou au coucher du soleil. Comment cela se passe-t-il? La réfraction du Soleil par l'atmosphère crée un spectre vertical. Au fur et à mesure que le soleil descend sous l'horizon, les couleurs spectrales disparaissent une à une à commencer par le rouge, l'orangé, puis le jaune. Quand ces 3 couleurs sont disparues, quelques fois, à peine le temps d'un éclair, la seule couleur qui reste visible est le vert.
