The attitude indicator shows rotation about both the longitudinal axis to indicate the degree of bank, and about the lateral axis to indicate pitch(nose up, level or nose down)... The principal parts of interest to the pilot are : The miniature wings attached to the case remain parallel to the wings of the aircraft. The horizon bar which separates the top(light) and bottom(dark) halves to the ball. The degree marks on the upper periphery of the dial. The first 3 on both sides of center are 10 degrees apart, then 60 degree bank marks, and 90 degree bank marks. Fifteen degrees of bank is called a standard rate turn.

In a skidding turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. After return on the aircraft to straight and level flight, the instrument shows a turn in the direction of the skid. In a normal turn, the gyro precesses towards the inside of the turn. The precession error is quickly corrected by the erecting mechanism.

CONT

The only really tricky part of the attitude indicator is its erecting mechanism. When power(vacuum) is first applied to the instrument, the mechanism quickly erects the gyro spindle to plumb-vertical in order to align the artificial horizon with the natural horizon. In flight, the erecting mechanism continually compensates the gyro for precession errors in order to keep it aligned throughout the course of a long flight. The design of the erecting mechanism is quite clever. In an air-driven attitude gyro, there are "pendulous vanes" suspended from pivots attached to the lower portion of the sealed gyro housing, one vane for each exhaust port. The vanes are positioned so that, when the gyro is erect, each vane half-covers its associated exhaust port. If the gyro tilts so that its axle is not plumb, the pendulous vanes shift so that one exhaust port is more-than-half-covered and the opposite exhaust port is less-than-half-covered. The resulting imbalance of discharge air exerts a force on the rotor housing at right angles to the direction of tilt, causing the gyro to precess to the erect position. As soon as the gyro is erect, the pendulous vanes return to a balanced condition to remove the precessing force. Pure magic! The erecting mechanism can erect the gyro quite quickly at initial power-up because the gyro doesn’t exhibit much gyroscopic rigidity at low rotor RPMs. Typically, the horizon bar becomes level within the first 10 or 15 seconds, and then its oscillations(caused by precessional nutation of the gyro) are damped out within a minute or so as the rotor comes up-to-speed.

The rotor of the air-driven gyro is mounted in a sealed housing. Filtered air is brought into the gyro housing through passages in the rear pivot, the gimbal ring, and the side pivots. The air then blows against the rotor through two angled nozzles on opposite sides of the housing. The circumference of the rotor is machined with dozens of little bucket-like cutouts which allow the airflow to spin the rotor like a waterwheel (but a whole lot faster). Having done its work, the air then exits through exhaust ports on the lower part of the sealed gyro housing, whereupon it is sucked out of the instrument case by the vacuum pump.

The attitude indicator relies on the principle of gyroscopic rigidity in space--the rapidly-spinning rotor disk resists any attempt to disturb its orientation. Thus, the gyro provides a stable horizontal reference against which the pitch and roll attitudes of the aircraft can be measured. The "artificial horizon bar" on the face of the attitude indicator is mechanically coupled to the gyro inside, so it remains parallel to the natural horizon. The instrument's little "symbolic airplane" is fixed to the instrument case, however, so it follows the roll and pitch movements of the real airplane. Consequently, the relationship of the horizon bar to the symbolic airplane is the same as the relationship between the natural horizon and the real airplane.

The attitude indicator and heading indicator are based on a gyro's rigidity in space. Because a gyro resists being tipped over, it can provide a stable reference to the real horizon or to a specific direction.

The attitude indicator(also called the artificial horizon or the gyro horizon) provides the pilot with an artificial horizon as a means of reference when the natural horizon cannot be seen... The natural horizon is represented by a horizon bar on the face of the instrument. The attitude of the aircraft in relation to the horizon is indicated by a split bar or, on some instruments, by a miniature airplane... When the airplane noses up, the miniature airplane rises above the horizon bar, indicating a nose high condition. When the airplane noses down, the miniature airplane sinks below the horizon bar, indicating a nose down condition. When the airplane banks, the miniature airplane banks on the horizon bar and the pointer indicates the degree of bank on the index scale... In the caged position, the gyro is locked with the miniature airplane showing level flight.

L'horizon artificiel [...] est essentiellement constitué par un gyroscope tournant à vitesse élevée dont la principale caractéristique est la fixité dans l'espace. Il reste fixe tandis que le boîtier solidaire du tableau de bord se déplace avec l'avion. [...] La maquette qui représente l'avion (ailes et cône d'hélice) est solidaire du tableau de bord. Elle se déplace devant un tambour sur lequel figure une représentation de l'horizon naturel, de la terre (en noir) et du ciel (en bleu). Ce tambour gradué en degré permet de déterminer l'assiette. La couronne supérieure porte, de part et d'autre du repère origine, trois repères principaux à 30, 60 et 90° permettant de mesurer l'inclinaison.

Le gyroscope de l'indicateur de virage est généralement fixé selon un angle de 30 degrés. Lorsque l'avion vire, la force centrifuge entraîne la précession du gyroscope. L'importance de la précession fait s'incliner vers la gauche ou vers la droite un avion miniature situé sur le cadran de l'instrument. Plus le virage est rapide, plus la précession est forte, d'où une inclinaison plus importante de l'avion miniature.

Lorsqu'on lève le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé [de l'horizon artificiel] monte au-dessus de la barre d'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez haut. Lorsqu'on baisse le nez de l'avion, l'avion stylisé cale sous l'horizon pour indiquer une assiette nez bas. Lorsque l'avion s'incline, l'avion stylisé s'incline par rapport à la barre d'horizon et l'aiguille indique le nombre de degrés d'inclinaison sur l'échelle graduée. [...] Lorsqu'il est verrouillé, le gyroscope est immobilisé de telle façon que l'avion-symbole affiche le vol en palier.

OBS

Ne pas confondre avec l'«avion-symbole» du conservateur de cap (ou gyroscope directionnel) qui est représenté à la verticale sur le limbe alors qu'ici la maquette se présente à l'horizontale.

In the attitude indicator, the gyro wheel is mounted horizontally and spins about its vertical axis. It is mounted in a universal gimbal ring system, free about both the pitching and rolling axes of the airplane and is therefore able to remain spinning in a horizontal plane parallel to the true horizon, regardless of the rolling or pitching movements of the airplane around it.

The inherent assumption in establishing this percentage is that the revenue stream from the project is reinvested at the discount rate. The A. I. R. R.(...) equates the present values of costs with the future value of revenues.(...) Simply stated the A. I. R. R. is the rate at which the present value of project costs would have to be compounded in order to equal the future value of project revenues.
