Embedded GPS INS. The EGI is in an all-attitude navigation system providing outputs of linear and angular acceleration, velocity, position, attitude (roll, pitch, and platform azimuth), magnetic and true heading, altitude, time tags, and time. When installed in the host platforms in the appropriate configuration, the system provides the navigation functions of the equipment it replaces. It uses vehicle electrical power (28 Vdc), turn-on and mode commands, initialization data, and altitude data, as well as Global Positioning System (GPS) satellite inputs for GPS or GPS/Inertial Navigation System (INS) operation, and is able to track five space vehicles simultaneously.

Quand le pilote perçoit l'assiette inclinée sur son horizon artificiel, plusieurs événements néfastes peuvent survenir: [...] Si [...] le pilote applique les ailerons dans la mauvaise direction, l'angle de roulis augmente et l'horizon artificiel se déplace (vers le haut) de plus en plus loin du niveau avec pour conséquence de faire baisser le nez de l'avion et de perdre de l'altitude. Le pilote peut être en mesure de réaliser son erreur aussitôt et de corriger la situation, mais pas toujours. Le pilote pourra avoir le réflexe d'arrêter la rotation de la barre d'horizon artificiel avec un solide coup d'ailerons en direction opposée du déplacement de la barre d'horizon, puis de tirer sur la commande de profondeur pour arrêter la perte d'altitude. Cela n'aura comme effet que de serrer davantage la spirale.

The heavy black line on the artificial horizon represents the horizon line. If the airplane is above the horizon, it is climbing. If it is below the horizon, it is diving. The greater amount of climb or dive, the farther up or down the horizon line is seen. The artificial horizon dial also has a black arrowhead showing the degree of bank to left or right. If the airplane is banked to the right, the arrowhead points to the left of zero.

The mode of operation of a vertical gyro in which the gyro is being erected or slaved initially.

Gyroscopic instruments... Once the artificial horizon line is aligned with the natural horizon of the earth during initial erection, the artificial horizon is kept horizontal by the gyro on which it is mounted. An erection mechanism automatically rights the gyro when precession occurs due to maneuvers or friction. When the older-type gyro tumbles as a result of extreme attitude changes, the rotor normally precesses slowly back to the horizontal plane. Even an attitude indicator in perfect condition can give slight erroneous readings. Small errors due to acceleration and deceleration are not significant because the erection device corrects them promptly; nonetheless, the pilot should be aware of them...
