The acquisition sensor constantly scans from horizon to horizon using a large field of view, small aperture, and fast scan mode. When a potential target is detected, the acquisition sensor begins a two dimensional(2D) track and passes the detection to the tracking sensor, which verifies the target and continues the track. 1, record 1, English, - acquisition%20sensor

A radiometer or other sensor that is used to align or control the axis of a spacecraft, missile, or satellite with the apparent horizon of the Earth or of any other astronomical body. 4, record 2, English, - horizon%20sensor
Record number: 2, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Horizon sensors [are] the primary means for directly determining the attitude of a spacecraft relative to the Earth ... The attitude of spacecraft relative to Earth is one of the most important aspects of attitude determination and control, particularly for communications (TDRSS), weather (GOES), Earth resources (LANDSAT), satellites, etc. Earth cannot be treated as a point source like the Sun, especially for near Earth satellites for which Earth covers about 40% of the sky. Therefore, merely detecting the Earth is by no means sufficient for attitude determination, even for the most crude attitude determination requirements. Hence most sensors are designed to detect the Earth’s horizon. Horizon sensors are infrared devices that detect the contrast of the cold of space and the warmth of the Earth (or other body). 5, record 2, English, - horizon%20sensor

Garde-cap. 5, record 2, French, - capteur%20d%27horizon

Sensing is either static or dynamic. The static sensor uses a common direction-sensing technique involving an arrangement of sensors grouped around the pointing axis so that they each receive the same illumination when the sensor is exactly aligned with the target-source.... The dynamic sensor operates by scanning across the Earth's disk and detecting the temperature difference between space and Earth. It is otherwise known as a "horizon sensor" or "horizon scanner". 3, record 3, English, - Earth%20sensor

The Conical Earth Sensor(CES) is a scanning horizon sensor used to gather attitude information on orbiting spacecraft. The most common application utilizes one or more CESs to provide pitch and roll attitude data for 3-axis stabilized orbiting spacecraft. The CES, a robust and a versatile sensor, can be used from low Earth orbit to above geosynchronous orbits, as well as during transfer orbits. 2, record 4, English, - scanning%20horizon%20sensor

The basic attitude sensor was the three-gyro inertial reference package. It contained two air-tight integrating gyro units to sense pitch and yaw, and one miniature integrating gyro unit to sense roll. The pitch and roll gyros were torqued by signals obtained by two Barnes mod IIA infrared horizon sensors. Gyrocompassing oriented the vehicle to an orbit plane yaw reference by detecting a component of the programmed pitch rate through the roll horizon sensor. The geocentric pitch rate(typically 4 deg/min, for a low-altitude orbit) was programmed as a constant torque to the pitch gyro. This pitch component, if a yaw error was present, would be sensed differentially when compared with the roll components of the two horizon-sensor heads. The differential would be seen as a function of yaw error. 2, record 5, English, - roll%20component
Record number: 5, Textual support number: 2 CONT
During heading align, the rotor of the resolver is positioned so that it transforms the N-S and E-W liquid level signals into pitch and roll components which are referenced to heading. The pitch component is amplified, demodulated and summed with amplified and demodulated feedback signals from the VG [vertical gyro] roll and pitch pickoffs and the pitch synchro. The combined signal is then modulated, amplified and converted to DC [direct current] to drive the platform pitch gimbal torque motor until the input signals are nulled. 1, record 5, English, - roll%20component
