HORIZONTAL AIRFOIL [5 records]

Record 1 2016-03-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Airframe
DEF

An [horizontal] airfoil placed at the rear end of the fuselage to balance the [aircraft] and provide longitudinal stability.

OBS

tailplane; tail plane: terms standardized by ISO.

OBS

tail plane: term officially approved by the International Civil Aviation Association (ICAO).

OBS

The terms "stabilizer" and "stabiliser" are frequently used as a synonym of "horizontal stabilizer," but stabilizers can be horizontal or vertical.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Cellule d'aéronefs
DEF

Record 2 2015-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Flight Controls (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Maneuvers
DEF

A movable horizontal airfoil, usually attached to the horizontal stabilizer on the tail, that is used to control pitch[;] it usually changes the attitude of the nose, making it move up and down.

OBS

control surface: Any external moveable part of an aircraft designed to help it change orientation or speed, not including the propeller. The most commonly used control surfaces are ailerons, elevator, rudder, flaps, and spoilers.

OBS

elevator: term standardized by ISO and NATO.

PHR

Up-elevator, horizontal elevator.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Commandes de vol (Constructions aéronautiques)
  • Manœuvres d'aéronefs
DEF

Record 3 2012-02-13

English

Subject field(s)
  • Electric Rotary Machines - Types
CONT

Windmills may rotate by being "pushed" by the wind(drag) or by using aerodynamic forces such as "lift"... [and] may rotate around a vertical or a horizontal axis.... The Darreus windmill is a vertical axis aerodynamic type. It was invented in France in the 1930s and is currently being developed for manufacture in Canada. It has one or more curved flexible blades of airfoil design, shaped to a curve that is consistent with the centrifugal and aerodynamic forces it experiences in rotation. It is not self-starting, but a small Savonius rotor can be attached to its central axis to provide this feature.

Record 4 1986-10-08

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Systems
CONT

Airfoil Ice Protection : Hot air is used for anti-icing the slat leading edges when extended or retracted, anti-icing the ram airscoop, and for de-icing the horizontal stabilizer leading edge.... With AIR FOIL ice protection selected in flight, hot air is directed continuously to the slat leading edges via telescopic ducting and to the ram airscoop.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Circuits des aéronefs
OBS
