Shaduf : Primitive device used to lift water from a well or stream for irrigation purposes. Essentially the device consists of a long boom balanced across a horizontal support form 8 to 10 ft(2. 4 3 m) above the ground. The beam has a long, thin end and a short, stubby end. From the long end a bucket or similar container is suspended, and on the shorter end there is a counterweight. The operator pulls on a rope that lowers the long end of the boom so that the bucket submerges and is filled with water. He then releases the rope, allowing the counterweight to raise the bucket to the desired level, and then empties the bucket and repeats the process.

Shadufs can be used in a series where it is desired to raise water to a height exceeding the range of a single one. It has been suggested that the massive stones used in building the pyramids of Egypt were raised by an ancient variant of this device.

An instrument which measures combined direct solar radiation and diffuse sky radiation.

Diffuse solar irradiance is a measure of the rate of incoming solar energy on a horizontal plane at the Earth's surface resulting from scattering of the Sun's beam due to atmospheric constituents. Diffuse solar irradiance is measured by a pyranometer, with its glass dome shaded from the Sun's beam. The shading is accomplished either by an occulting disc or a shading arm attached to a solar tracker. The angle subtended by the shading disc of the diffuse pyranometer should be the same as the field of view of the pyrheliometer. It is important that the dome of the pyranometer is always fully shaded from the Sun's beam to ensure accuracy of measurement, and should be checked for correct alignment on a regular basis.

The pocket connection consists of a void or "pocket" created in the wall by changing block placement or cutting into the block units after the walk is erected. The bearing surface on which the joists(or girders) bear typically is grouted solid creating a horizontal reinforced bond beam that ties together the walls in the story below. Light-frame builders may not be familiar with ledger and pocket connections. Such connections typically do not find much use in light-frame construction. However, ledger and pocket connections are not new to the building industry. For example, wood floor-to-masonry ledger and pocket connections were used in the United States during the 1700s, 1800s, and 1900s in residential masonry homes and continue to perform satisfactorily.

To secure the extremely thin beam necessary to give the resolution required the antenna must be long in the plane of oscillation. Antennae have therefore been designed as long as sixteen feet for precise elevation and azimuth scanning. These antenna arrays are quite often similar except for positioning. The elevation antennae is mounted in a vertical position and the azimuth antenna mounted in a horizontal position.
