HORIZONTAL BOILER [14 records]

Record 1 2022-03-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ovens, Furnaces and Boilers (Heating)
DEF

A boiler in which the water to be vaporized is housed in a drum through which horizontal tubes(fire tubes) are run.

CONT

Fire-tube boilers may be designed for vertical, inclined, or horizontal positions. One of the most generally used types is the horizontal-return-tube(HRT) boiler. In the HRT boiler, part of the heat from the combustion gases is transferred directly to the lower portion of the shell. The gases then make a return pass through the horizontal tubes or flues before being passed into the stack.

CONT

The... horizontal return tube boiler... gets it's name from the horizontal fire tubes which run back-to-front through the lower half of the boiler drum. The gas burner is located under the front half of the boiler drum. The hot gases then pass to the rear of the fire box where they turn round and return to the front via the fire tubes and into the smoke box.(see this picture for a clearer description).

OBS

Gases from an external furnace are passed through the tubes for heat transfer to the drum water.

CONT

DEF

A horizontal, fire-tube boiler with a small, internal combustion chamber of cubical design. The short, first-pass bank of tubes is connected between the rear of the combustion chamber and the rear of the boiler. The remaining banks or tubes extend the full length of the boiler, above the combustion chamber and the first-pass bank. The combustion chamber may be steel, refractory, or water-cooled refractory.

CONT

Inshot burners are placed horizontally, making them particularly adaptable to firing Scotch-type boilers. Upshot burners are arranged vertically, making them more adaptable in firebox-type boilers.

CONT

[Forms of fire-tube boiler. Common Types. "Firebox boiler" is another name often used for locomotive-type boilers. It means that the firebox, or furnace, is internal with the boiler and is of a particular shape.

DEF

A horizontal, fire tube boiler consisting of a cylindrical steel shell with 1 or more cylindrical, internal combustion chambers located(generally) in the lower portion, and with a bank or banks(passes) of tubes attached to both end closures. The combustion chamber(s) and tubes are completely surrounded by water. A Scotch boiler is described by the number of passes, and whether it is a dryback boiler(for stationary service) or a wetback boiler(for marine or stationary service).

CONT

The Scotch marine boiler is a fire-tube boiler return tubular unit. It consists of a cylindrical shell containing the firebox and tubes. The tubes surround the upper portion of the firebox and are rolled into tube sheets on each end of the boiler. Combustion gases pass to the rear of the furnace, returning through the tubes to the front, where they are discharged to the stack.

CONT

Some Scotch boilers are fired from both ends; consequently they are called "double-ended Scotch boilers".

Next form of haulage at Cwmdu Colliery was the installation of a small winch in October 1934. The steam to drive this winch was provided by a vertical boiler, 8 feet high and 5 feet in diameter. A small engine house had been constructed from round bush poles, roofed with galvanised corrugated iron, and it had a concrete floor... The Cwmdu Colliery syndicate had planned to replace its early vertical boiler with the horizontal boiler to give the mine an increased flow of steam power.

A horizontal, fire-tube boiler in which the flue gases are passed back and forth through the boiler shell 2 or more times by means of a tube arrangement or baffles. Horizontal Rotary-Atomizing Burner. ... The burner consists of an atomizing or spinner cup, and air blower, and a region in which the air and oil are mixed. The cup, which is mounted on a horizontal motor shaft, is revolved at a speed of 3,450 revolutions per minute or higher. The oil fed to the cup is atomized by whirling the oil off the edge of the cup. As the oil droplets leave the edge, they are caught up in a horizontal air current from the blower. The resulting fuel-air mixture is ignited by a gas pilot near the cup, and the flame is projected horizontally.

CONT

Steel boilers are fabricated into one assembly of a given size and rating, usually by welding. The heat exchange surface past the firebox usually is an assembly of vertical, horizontal, or slanted tubes. The tubes may be firetube(flue gas inside, heated fluid outside) or watertube(fluid inside). The tubes may be in one or more passes. As with cast-iron boilers, dry base, wet leg, or wet base design may be used. The majority of small steel heating boilers are of dry base, vertical firetube design. Larger boilers usually have horizontal or slanted tubes; both firetube and watertube designs are used. A popular design for medium and large steel boilers, is the Scotch, or Scotch Marine, which is characterized by having a central fluid-backed cylindrical firebox, surrounded by firetubes in one or more passes, all within the outer shell.... Steel boiler sizes range from approximately 14. 7 kW(150 mBh) to the largest boilers made.

OBS

The boiler heats the water for circulation through the system. It may be rectangular or square (occasionally even round) and made of steel or cast iron.

OBS

Boilers may be grouped into classes based on working pressure and temperature, fuel used, shape and size [materials of construction]....

GÉNÉRATEURS EN ACIER. Considérations sur l'utilisation de l'acier. [...]
