The comb nephoscope consists essentially of a series of rods assembled in the form of a comb, and mounted on a vertical rod with the "teeth" of the comb horizontal. The vertical rod is free to turn, and is rotated by means of a pulley and rope device. The observer selects a recognizable feature of the cloud base, and then rotates the comb of the nephoscope until that feature appears to move along the longitudinal member of the comb.... By using the "teeth" of the comb, and a timepiece, the observer may time the motion of the cloud. The speed of the cloud may then be determined, provided its height is known. 1, record 8, English, - comb

Free balloon whose path while moving upwards is visually observed in order to measure upper winds. 3, record 13, English, - pilot%20balloon

One expedient method for determining the winds aloft entails the launching and tracking of a pilot balloon, also known as a pibal. The name for these balloons that do not carry instruments apparently came from their use during the 19th century when they were launched prior to manned balloon ascents to help guide or "pilot" the manned balloons. The brightly colored helium filled balloon rises at a known ascent rate. However, the balloon is carried horizontally with the wind. Since the assumption is made that the balloon serves as a tracer of the wind, the horizontal motion of the balloon over measured time intervals can be used to determine the wind speed. An observer visually tracks the motion of the balloon with an instrument called a theodolite and records the elevation and azimuth angles at timed intervals. The sequence of observed elevation and azimuth information are plotted on a plotting board to obtain the balloon motion. The wind speed and direction at each selected level are determined. Wind observations may be limited by low cloud ceilings that obscure the balloon. 2, record 13, English, - pilot%20balloon

Fanciful twentieth century expression came from the terminology used by the United States Weather Bureau. The Bureau divides clouds into classes, and each into nine types. Cloud nine is cumulonimbus, a cumulus cloud that develops to a vast height, with rounded masses of white vapor heaped one on the other, the upper parts resembling the shapes of domes, mountains or towers, while the base is practically horizontal. 4, record 14, English, - be%20in%20seventh%20heaven

Record number: 18, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The supercell tornado is the most common and most violent type of tornado. These storms are formed from the rotating supercell thunderstorm, due to a clockwise change in wind direction with height. This changing of the wind direction with height causes horizontal tubes of spinning air to form. A thunderstorm updraft tilts the horizontally spinning tube of air into the vertical and stretches it out forming a small area of low pressure called a "Meso Low" which enhances the low level winds which ultimately leads to the formation of a tornado. Supercell tornadoes can exist for up to six hours, grow to diameters greater than a mile, and produce winds up to 300 mph. The visible funnel cloud forms because of the significant air pressure drop in the region of the meso low and tornado. The lower air pressure allows water vapor to condense into cloud droplets at a lower altitude, forming a cloud around the spinning funnel of air. In areas of the country, such as Colorado, where low level moisture may be lacking, a tornado may occur with no visible funnel cloud at all. 3, record 18, English, - supercell%20tornado

2, record 18, French, - tornade%20supercellulaire

The model assumes three separate phases in the behaviour of dredged material dumped in open water : 1) Convective descent. The dredged material forms a cloud whose descent is dominated by gravity. 2) Dynamic collapse. The cloud hits the sea floor or reaches a depth where its buoyancy becomes neutral and horizontal spreading dominates. 3) Passive transport-diffusion. The duration of the precipitation varies and depends on the following factors : the size of the base area, the speed of the cloud, and the rate of further development of the cloud at the rear, if any. Such development is true for all cloud types that produce precipitation. Horizontal development towards the rear decreases the relative motion of the cloud and associated precipitation. This therefore increases the duration of precipitation. 3, record 28, English, - horizontal%20development
