HORIZONTAL COMPONENT LIFT [3 records]

Record 1 2014-04-23

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aerodynamics and Theory of Gases
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Navigation Instruments
CONT

The inclinometer in both the turn and slip indicator [older aircraft] and the turn coordinator [modern aircraft] measures the turn quality.... when in a turn, part of the lift of the wing goes into "turning" the aircraft, this is called the horizontal component of lift(HCL). This HCL is directed toward the center of the turn. Also, a force directed outward and away from the center of the turn exists. This is called centrifugal force(CF). For the turn to be coordinated these two opposing forces must be equal. When they are equal, the ball in the inclinometer will remain in the middle.

OBS

Record 2 2010-04-29

English

Subject field(s)
  • Aircraft Airframe
CONT

The aircraft sustained damage to its right wing, right landing gear leg, and horizontal stabilizer.

CONT

A dihedral wing is producing equal lift on the port and the starboard wing in straight and level flight. If the starboard wing dips, it's vertical lift component will begin to increase and it's horizontal lift component will begin to decrease until the wing is parallel to the flow(trigonometry and the lift force components on your wing) and at the same time the vertical lift component on the port wing will decrease. This makes the starboard wing rise and the port wing dip until it reaches it's equilibrium position(hopefully, level and straight).

PHR

Incidence on the starboard wing, root of the starboard wing.

PHR

The right wing leading edge.

PHR

Aileron on the right wing.

Domaine(s)

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Aeronautical Engineering and Maintenance
CONT

The horizontal component of the resulting hydrodynamic pressure force is termed "fluid-displacement drag" and the vertical component, "fluid-displacement lift. "Additional fluid forces termed "fluid-spray thrust or drag" and "fluid-spray lift" are created on aircraft when some of this displaced runway fluid in the form of spray sub-sequently impinges on other parts of the aircraft such as the tires, landing gear, and flaps.
