Nuclear Power Demonstration reactor. This was the prototype CANDU reactor, and the first power reactor in Canada. It was located upstream of AECL' s Chalk River laboratories, along the Ottawa River's south shore(i. e. in Ontario). The reactor had a maximum continuous output of 22 MWe gross(19. 5 MWe net)... The reactor was built as a joint AECL/Ontario Hydro/Canadian General Electric project, and was initially intended to use a vertically-fuelled pressure vessel reactor. The design was changed in 1957 to natural uranium fuel bundles in horizontal pressure tubes in unpressurized heavy water moderator, with on-line refuelling. These are hallmarks of the CANDU reactor. The reactor had 132 fuel channels(each fuel channel comprised a pressure tube inside a calandria tube) and the coolant leaving the channels was 7. 2 MPa and 277°C. The main reactivity control was by adjusting the heavy-water moderator level, which could be rapidly dumped for fast shut down. NPD was finally shut down on May 5 1987, for economic reasons... 4, record 8, English, - nuclear%20power%20demonstration%20reactor

Plants with limbs that grow down, instead of up, can be spectacular. Horticulturally, the reason for this growth habit is a genetic mutation. Most plants have a central growth point that remains dominant, and the trunk and limbs grow vertically. In the weeping tree category, this growth control is interrupted. The new layer of growth is somehow superimposed over the previous layer, and is more horizontal than vertical. This growth pattern is known as plagiotropism. 1, record 22, English, - weeping%20tree

wheelaborator.... The [castings] are tumbled about in a cabinet on a horizontal belt and at the same time are subjected to bombardment by a stream of metal shot. This latter is maintained by feeding the shot on to the blades of an impeller. The shot are then projected centrifugally at high speed on to the castings. This method is more economical and admits of better control of the abrasive than is possible using air jets. The moving belt must, of course, be well covered with parts to be cleaned, and the impeller blades should preferably be of some hard metal such as high-silicon iron. 3, record 26, English, - shot%20blasting%20machine

A Practical Drill for the Airborne Profile Recorder - The paper attempts to set out detailed working procedures for the use of Airborne Profile Records, based on a number of experiments carried out by the author during the last four years and a study of experiments carried out by others. The general working principles of A.P.R. are first described. Detailed requirements are then given with regard to the material and records which it is necessary to obtain from the contractor who will operate the A.P.R. This is followed by a description of the preliminary analysis of this material which is necessary before work can start. 2, record 34, English, - airborne%20profile%20record

Wheelbarrowing is a condition that arises when the nosewheel rather than the main gear is forced to support an abnormal share of the aircraft’s weight. Touching down on the nosewheel, excessive braking, or friction between the wheels and runway caused by a side-skid may cause wheelbarrowing. Wheelbarrowing can damage a nosewheel or cause an aircraft to yaw uncontrollably off its intended course.. 2, record 35, English, - wheelbarrowing
Record number: 35, Textual support number: 1 OBS
During take-off, "wheelbarrowing" may occur at lower speeds than during landing due to the slipstream increasing the lifting effect of the horizontal stabilizer. The use of excessive forward elevator control pressure during take-off to hold the aircraft on the ground to speeds above normal take-off speed could, if a "yaw" force is introduced, result in serious wheelbarrowing. 3, record 35, English, - wheelbarrowing

In the windmill type, the operation of air measurement involves readings of dials at the beginning and end of a measured period. Computer simulation of single-well steam assisted gravity drainage (SW-SAGD). ... Steam assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) is an effective method of producing heavy oil and bitumen. In a typical SAGD approach, steam is injected into a horizontal well located directly above a horizontal producer. A steam chamber grows around the injection well and helps displace heated oil toward the production well. Single-well (SW) SAGD attempts to create a similar process using only one horizontal well. This may include steam injection from the toe of the horizontal well with production at the heel. Obvious advantages of SW-SAGD include cost savings and utility in relatively thin reservoirs. However, the process is technically challenging. To improve early-time response of SW-SAGD, it is necessary to heat the nearwellbore area to reduce oil viscosity and allow gravity drainage to take place. 1, record 47, English, - single%2Dwell%20steam%20assisted%20gravity%20drainage

If a gyroscope, mounted on its gimbal rings, is set spinning about a horizontal axis, and the outer gimbal ring is rotated in a horizontal plane, then the inner gimbal ring, carrying the flywheel, tilts up out of the horizontal plane in which it, too first lay. After a few oscillations, damped out by friction, the axis of spin of the gyroscope settles down along a vertical direction. Inertial guidance systems make use of very similar phenomena. Once a gyroscope has been set spinning about a chosen axis, any motion that would cause it to deviate from this direction calls into existence a torque that can be used as an error signal to control corrective maneuvers... Some of the most important applications of gyroscopic phenomena are in aircraft instruments. A free(perfectly balanced) gyroscope can give a constant indication of a chosen reference direction for checking the correct course, and a gravitationally loaded gyroscope can be used to identify the true vertical at all times and so define an artificial horizon against which the pilot can measure the angles of bank and climb. 2, record 52, English, - gyroscopic%20phenomenon

2, record 52, French, - ph%C3%A9nom%C3%A8ne%20gyroscopique

ISAS utilizes "aerodynamic lifting bodies" to conduct space research and observations, and is developing launch vehicles and satellites for such purposes. In its former guise as part of Tokyo University Institute of Industrial Science in 1955, the organization conducted the horizontal flight tests of pencil rockets, and as Tokyo University Aerospace Research Center, it launched Japan's first artificial satellite, Ohsumi, in 1970. These entities disappeared in 1981 in a "progressive amalgamation" under the direct control of the Ministry of Education. The head office of ISAS is at Sagamigahara in Kanagawa Prefecture, and the test range is at Uchinoura in Kagoshima Prefecture. 3, record 56, English, - Institute%20of%20space%20%26%20astronautical%20Science

"wheelaborator" : A machine used for cleaning castings. The latter are tumbled about in a cabinet on a horizontal belt and at the same time are subjected to bombardment by a stream of metal shot. 3, record 70, English, - wheelabrating
