Subject field(s)
  • Road Design
  • Road Transport
  • Rail Transport
CONT

In connecting straight(tangent) sections of roadway with a horizontal curve, several options are available. The most obvious of these is the simple circular curve, which is just a curve with a single, constant radius. Other options include reverse curves, compound curves, and spiral curves. Reverse curves generally consist of two consecutive curves that turn in opposite directions. They are used to shift the alignment of a highway laterally. The curves used are usually circular and have equal radii.

English

Subject field(s)
  • Statistical Methods
  • Decision-Making Process
  • Economic Planning
DEF

An approach to problem analysis which weighs risks in a situation by introducing probabilities to give a more accurate assessment of the risks involved.

CONT

In probability analysis a specific probability distribution is assigned to each variable selected within the sensitivity analysis step. Risk analysis exploits Monte Carlo simulation techniques to aggregate the probabilities assigned to the critical variables. In choosing the level of aggregation of the possibly critical variables within the sensitivity analysis, the literature suggests focusing on low-level quantities that compose the grand categories of cash flow.

OBS

risk analysis: Not to be confused with sensitivity analysis.

OBS

The result is most commonly reported in the form of a cumulative probability curve plotted on a graph, in which the vertical axis represents the probability that a measure of project worth will fall below a stated value, and the horizontal axis represents the values of the measure of project worth.

DEF

Windmills may rotate by being "pushed" by the wind(drag) or by using aerodynamic forces such as "lift"... [and] may rotate around a vertical or a horizontal axis.... The Darreus windmill is a vertical axis aerodynamic type. It was invented in France in the 1930s and is currently being developed for manufacture in Canada. It has one or more curved flexible blades of airfoil design, shaped to a curve that is consistent with the centrifugal and aerodynamic forces it experiences in rotation. It is not self-starting, but a small Savonius rotor can be attached to its central axis to provide this feature.

Shading the space below the curve produces a shaded area--but not an area chart. For it to be defined as an area chart, the two plotting variables would have to be functionally related in some way. That is, it should be possible to express their relationship by an equation of some sort.... But regardless of the area shape, its value can be determined by the product of some vertical value and some horizontal value. This therefore relates the area to the name and calibration of the vertical and horizontal axes.
