A vigorous deep-rooted perennial herb introduced from Eurasia that reproduces by seed, by thick vertical roots and by cylindral horizontal roots 0. 25-0. 5 cm in diameter.

Perennial sow thistle grows on a single stem, branching near the top. The branches end in large, loose, clusters of yellow, dandelion-like flowers. Leaves vary in shape and have weak prickles on the edges. Upper leaves clasp the stem directly. Mature plants contain a bitter milky juice and grow to 1.5 m tall. Annual sow thistle has smaller flowers. [It] is an aggressive, creeping weed that can severely reduce yields in cultivated fields.

This is now the most widely used harvesting method. After bogs are flooded to a depth of about 1 to 2 feet, machines resembling lawn tractors carrying large horizontal reels are passed through the bogs. A new concept in steel storages is called the Lipp tank which utilizes a continuous coil of aluminized or galvanized steel rolled upwards into a spiral to form the tank wall. A windlass consisting of a vertical and horizontal spar with a bight of the rope taken around the horizontal spar, which is used to move heavy loads over short distances.

In making a Spanish windlass, fasten a rope between the load you are to move and an anchorage some distance away. Place a short spar vertically beside this rope, about halfway between the anchorage and the load. This spar may be a pipe or a pole, but in either case it should have as large a diameter as possible. Make a loop in the rope and wrap it partly around the spar. Insert the end of a horizontal rod through this loop. The horizontal rod should be a stout pipe or bar long enough to provide leverage. It is used as a lever to turn the vertical spar. As the vertical spar turns, the rope is wound around it, which shortens the line and pulls on the load. Make sure that the rope leaving the vertical spar is close to the same level on both sides to prevent the spar from tipping over.

Next form of haulage at Cwmdu Colliery was the installation of a small winch in October 1934. The steam to drive this winch was provided by a vertical boiler, 8 feet high and 5 feet in diameter. A small engine house had been constructed from round bush poles, roofed with galvanised corrugated iron, and it had a concrete floor...
